Two instruments were used in a retreat setting.  The instruments determined styles of leadership, defined ministry, discussed who performs the ministry, and to whom. The results provided opportunity for evaluation and setting of goals.  The most effective and dynamic churches were those that shared responsibility and power between clergy and laity. Three steps were involved in the project: sociological-sociopsychological understanding of the culture, theological formation, and application.  Having surveyed 26 authors on the commoners' culture, Hidaka submits a model of understanding culture in terms of the wa (concord-peace-harmony) value system--a diachronic and organismic interplay of value variables, including mythopoetic perception, rational lifestyle, consensus group-formation, and the societal mandala, each with processes of experiential dialectics.  The theological formation takes adjectival expressions. The author gathered data from biblical, theological, sociological, and psychological sources in order to design a training manual for training local church volunteers to minister as grief counselors.  Volunteers were selected by their minister and trained to understand the dynamics of grief, to counsel, and to make referrals when their counseling skills were limited.  Part I explains the dynamics of grief.  Part II presents the training manual. After a review of biblical, theological, and psychological literature, the lay board members of six selected churches were surveyed for demographic information, opinions regarding volunteerism, and theological beliefs. The pastors of those six churches were personally interviewed regarding the same items.
