The basis is the institutional needs of the air force and the research-identified needs and interests of chaplains.  These needs are correlated with the applicable principles of holistic growth.  The combined implications become the ingredients of the program. The resulting five-year design was evaluated by fifty-eight chaplains.  They concluded the program was effectively responsive to their needs and interests. This study examines the thesis that a theology of the cross, issuing in realistic, non-violent strategies, provides the most appropriate basis for a ministry committed to peacemaking.  Critical factors that need to inform and guide the theology and praxis of any peacemaking ministry are considered.  The thesis is tested in dialogue with significant sources, with persons exposed to the project, and through use of a questionnaire-survey instrument. 'From the garden to the crib' portrayed some significant events of salvation history from Adam and Eve to the nativity.  A questionnaire was administered before and after the pageant to the cast, a sampling of the audience and a religious education class of eighth graders. The project became a reality in 1981.  It was designed to fulfill two goals: 1. to articulate my theological understanding of the relationship between the church's educational ministry and its pastoral ministry of faith development; 2. to develop a three year program of adult education rooted in that theological understanding. The method of study included: classes, readings, Christian education committee work and the parish life and ministry development process. The project involves the drafting of a preliminary mission statement by the parish strategic planning committee, and the opportunity for reaction and input by the parishioners and organizations of parish to the preliminary statement.  A final version of the mission statement will then be developed through a parish leadership retreat weekend and a second drafting by the strategic planning committee.  The Parish Mission Statement will then be presented to the parish, and the adoption of the statement will take place through a signing of a parish covenant at the International Fair Liturgy in October 1983, and through adoption by a consensus of the parish council. Selected persons will attend a 90-minute session each week for ten weeks in which they will receive information on world hunger, education on the use of dietary exchange lists for diet control, and group support for personal needs and concerns.  They will be tested before and after the project for evidence of learning.  They will submit weekly progress reports on diet control.  They will experience a 24-hour fast.  They will be given recipes and other information to facilitate low-calorie, vegetarian and other diet programs.  Twelve persons participated in this project.  Generally, all persons lost weight or achieved their dietary goals. Most gained valuable insight into world hunger issues.  All persons received excellent group support. Projections by Boston Redevelopment Authority are used to project a ministry of pastoral care in the year 2000 AD.
