From the earliest times, the church has struggled with its unity as a 'body'. The twentieth century church is rocked by the growing number of schisms in many congregations.  Dr. mcGahey has served one such congregation trying to pick up the pieces of a major division.  Through the use of personal interviews and questionnaires, mcGahey has tried to evaluate the situation of his congregation.  He has tried to build a sense of unity through a 150th anniversary celebration, to affirm the ministry of his people.  The result is a reawareness of our own need to see ourselves as God's people, not our own. The purpose of this study is to discover if the curriculum can be effective in the black Baptist church as presently designed. The thesis of this paper is the importance of Christian education in the church, most specifically the black Baptist church.  The method of doing this study is through personal interviews of directors, teachers, pastors and students who are affiliated with the center using the above listed curriculum. Centering on the Fourth Gospel, the study integrates two theological dimensions of Advent, judgement and redemption.  The fundamental theological program is that in the moment of encounter with Christ, by one's choice judgement is exercised upon oneself and the possibility of redemption either claimed or rejected.  Lesson plans, background material on the Fourth Gospel, and study guides are included, as well as liturgies and sermons for Advent. Active listening, articulating personal needs, triangulation, and four ego defenses, drawn primarily from Virginia Satir and Murray Bowen's ideas, were explored through verbal presentations, skits, and discussions.  As a result, the participants were better able to identify potential problem patterns of communication.  They were also able to successfully apply this learning to their marriages one month later.
