The goals of this project are: 1) to systematize some practical, life-related biblical principles that have shaped the scriptural understanding of present church members; 2) to develop a means of introducing new members to these principles; 3) to facilitate the orientation of new members to the biblical concepts that have influenced the church family; 4) to help new members identify areas of personal need and find initial solutions, visualizing the church as a resource for growth and development; 5) to provide small group learning experiences, giving opportunity for bonding, security, and friendship.  The validation of the project is supported by both theology and survey resources. The paper uses the Wesleyan quadrilateral and an analysis of the local church setting as a basis for establishing role priorities.  The paper includes ten attributes which the writer considers essential for effective ministry.  Senior ministers should take into account their strengths and weaknesses regarding these attributes in order to establish priorities in a realistic and practical manner. Findings include information on who these people are, how they viewed their pastoral work while in it, the pressures and processes of leaving it, and how they experience life with the pastorate in their past and a new career before them.  The survey shows that, according to overall mean and rank, the primary stress in ministry and, according to higher values only, the major reason for the respondents leaving the pastorate is church conflict. The ex-pastor experienced role conflict and, while his exodus was multi-determined, he sought for consistency between his individual values and his occupation. The project was researched with a local church board of administration consisting of nine men.  There  were two facets of the project.  An educational emphasis employed twelve school of ministry sessions.  The experiential impact was highlighted by ten ministry reports from the board members.  Some of the results included a greater awareness that all Christians are ministers; an increased understanding of and involvement in ministry. There must be 'ownership' of the ministry before it can be effective.  The motivation for ministry must derive from a vital relationship with Jesus Christ and genuine love for people. This paper includes a discussion of prayer in life, a survey of literature, description and evaluation of the two groups, theological reflections, and includes outlines of the sessions, a prayer worksheet, and an evaluation form for spiritual growth groups.
