In the process of disengaging from the familiar and routine, Christians are exposed to fresh encounters with God in a community that shares this experience. The purpose was to gain insight into the impact of war-related trauma and to examine the perceived needs of the community in the post-war context. The primary methodology was phenomenological - examining spiritual understanding, traumatic events experienced, the impact of the trauma, coping mechanisms and support systems, cultural factors, and perceived needs. The continued psychological, physiological, and spiritual impact of the war-related trauma was notable. A review of leadership, adult learning and cultural change literature, semi-structured open-ended interviews and a focus group provided data that was analyzed using Grounded Theory to identify five essential leadership qualities and competencies. Equipping in four of these proved to reduce the gap. Among the key findings: the existence of a gap was confirmed and leadership qualities were deemed more important than competencies. The project explored the understanding of pastoral care as 'cure of souls' and the engagement of intentional presence in that cure, Christ's presence and human presence. This project proposes a holistic framework that might guide congregations in the work of healing and reconciliation. The report focuses on the relationship of two churches, one Black and one White, and explores the role dialogue plays in the healing journey of reconciliation. The research method used was Participatory Action Research (PAR) in an eight-week, small group process. All adults were able to identify personal growth as a result of the experience.
