For many, these two influences are oxymoronic. Yet if missional theology and ecclesiology are correct, then the missional church vision must influence attractional megachurches for these churches to be who God called them to be. It should also address the spiritual formation of the preacher. The praxis provided six clergy with an opportunity to deepen their understanding of the role of a rule of life and the practice of the spiritual disciplines in their preaching ministry. With the population decline and aging of the Upper Midwest, many congregations are no longer able to support full-time ordained pastors. Congregations of several denominations have pressed into service licensed local pastors, and other lay persons to preach. United Methodist preachers serving in rural parishes in Iowa were coached in various aspects of preaching. Together with a new emphasis on elders as spiritual leaders, this change fosters a renewed interest in the preparation and care of congregational leaders. This project proposes a new vision for elder selection and training, and retention that emphasizes the spiritual and perennial nature of the call to ordination as Ruling Elder. It incorporates spiritual discernment and sabbath-keeping as essential elements, including a redefining of the 'college of elders'. After surveying several studies of open communion, the author questioned clergy in the Episcopal Diocese of San Diego about their support for or opposition to it. I asked the participants to take a sixty day challenge by keeping a regular Sabbath rest each week. The Sabbath rest can help prevent burnout and lead to a stronger faith in God. I used the case study methodology by conducting research through an open-ended questionnaire and a survey. The retreat model was reviewed and evaluated by a panel of experts in the fields of spiritual formation and Christian leadership. Considering that many churches are declining or have plateaued, this study sought to discover practical, effective strategies and techniques that have contributed to overall church growth by baptism and conversion. The author asked what these practices were, how they were taught, and how they were modeled by the leadership. The author's research preceding the case study gives a review and foundation from the early church's teaching and experience in evangelism, discipleship, missions, pastoral leadership, and church growth to the present. A closer look was given at the causes and effects of little to no obedience and commitment to the Great Commission. As a former research engineer who concentrated on robotics research work for NASA Johnson Space Center, I aim to integrate my science and ministry background by using this book as a tool for apologetics and evangelism. This bilingual pictorial guide contains seventy full color pages with over one hundred color pictures or photographs; the companion DVD is a narrated commentary. It presents the latest findings on fine-tuning in the universe through astrophysics/cosmology from a theistic worldview and quotes from prominent scientists who support evidence for the cosmic fine-tuning of the universe. The target readers are educated ethnic Chinese. Thirty pre-published prototype copies were printed; volunteers were recruited to evaluate the book and DVD from Clear Lake Chinese Church and four other congregations in East Asia to form a broader test base. Pre-test and post-test questionnaires were distributed with the book and DVD. A total of one hundred and twenty-three test samples were collected.
