The author contends that in order to be holistic and successful, both the spiritual and business (temporal) development of a new church plant must work together simultaneously.  Furthermore, in order to sustain this vision, a new church planter in the A.M.E. Church needs to cultivate a support network of relationships with various people such as the bishop, presiding elder, colleagues, leaders, family, and friends to accomplish this strategy. The first chapter lays the foundation for Visio Divina by surveying the history and seminal literature of Lectio Divina and the use of sacred art within the tradition of the Church. The second chapter sees the prayer practices of Lectio Divina and Visio Divina being integrated into a methodology for preaching preparation. The third chapter demonstrates, through five preaching cases, how the incorporation of Visio Divina can become part of the preaching preparation process that includes not only the preacher but parish Partners-in-Preaching groups. A survey instrument was administered before teaching a twelve week course, and then re-administered after the course. The data from the pre- and post-tests were compared for change. Data were also compared across various subgroups to ascertain contributing factors of that change. This project creates a Christian practice of wine tasting. This report explores biblical, historical, liturgical, and cultural aspects of wine and describes a Christian practice of wine tasting that provides experiences of authentic community and theological reflection. It uses original research using the Participatory Action Research model for qualitative research in which members of a research cohort participate in the development of the model as they actively engage in the practice. This method of sermon preparation was a comprehensive approach integrating the benefits of long-term planning with an extended homiletical method. It mapped out a quarter of the year's preaching calendar and then staggered each sermon's preparation period, stretching it out over weeks instead of days. All of this was done with the hope that each stage of the expository process would be accomplished, and that the overall result would be an expository sermon with increased quality in both design and delivery. The research sought to assess the extent to which long-term sermon preparation increased the sermon quality. The results were incongruent and hence inconclusive. The quantitative research did not strongly support the hypothesis that long-term sermon preparation increases sermon quality in design and delivery. The qualitative assessment, however, did support the hypothesis strongly. The project also explored the importance of the Pastor's work as a spiritual coach with individuals and intergenerational small groups. Participants positively benefited from exposure to the lives and influences of the Church Fathers and to spiritual practices such as fasting and prayer. The project motivates the continued pursuit of spiritual formation as a relational journey of faith and accountability. Suicide is a major problem confronting every branch of the military. This study focuses on Airmen in the enlisted rank of E-4 to E-5. These Airmen are entering the ranks of the non-commissioned officer corps. Each participant was presented with a survey immediately before and after the safeTALK class to measure its effectiveness in making them more alert to the possibility of suicide, their confidence to ask directly about suicide, and connect those at risk with a keep safe connection. Sixty days after the class, another survey was sent by e-mail to examine the participant's retention of lessons learned in safeTALK and their willingness and ability to implement the steps for a successful intervention. Those who identified themselves as having personally experienced suicide through the attempted suicide or death of a loved one were asked to sit down for an interview with the author. Lessons learned from those who agreed to be interviewed were used to examine how their personal experience affected their motivation to help a person at risk and gauge safeTALK's effectiveness.
