Looking at text, tradition, and actual practice, the latter of which was gained through a survey of American Baptist pastors -- the writer evaluated approaches to this question, determining that inconsistency too often emerges in the context of application. The model is designed to engage church in society in ways which create a more effective church. Through qualitative research and considering the ministries of two illustrious, great African-American preachers, the dissertation demonstrates that congregational involvement in society increases church effectiveness, regardless of whether the style of ministry is priestly, as with Dr. J.H. Jackson, or prophetic, as was that of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The creation of an effective church in its fullness is, of course, a long-term assessment. The desire to do this research comes from the biblical mandate given by the Lord Jesus Christ to make disciples (Matt 28:19-20). Developing God's people into leaders who demonstrate Christ-like character is not only the greatest need in the world today, but also in today's church; therefore, developing competent spiritual leadership through discipleship must be its top priority. The following questions are answered: What can churches do to prepare men and women to develop into godly leaders? What can Waukegan Community Church do to become a disciple-making reproducing church? Will Discipleship for leadership make a significant contribution in helping Waukegan Community Church become a disciple-making, leader-developing church?
