As a result of this group, the author has spent the last twenty-five years studying about and leading small groups. She has a passion for training and encouraging individuals and churches in designing, leading, and maintaining healthy small group communities where, by God's grace, life-change can happen. What constitutes a healthy small group? In what way does authentic Christian community contribute to spiritual renewal and life-transformation? The author has attempted to give voice to the necessary ingredients that answer these concerns. This thesis will illustrate the process First Presbyterian Church of Burlington went through in order to shift the deacons' role from one of historical stewardship/maintenance leadership to one of pastoral care. Members of the church were led through a discernment process in order to identify and utilize these spiritual gifts. Prayer and preaching were the foundation for both the preacher and the laity throughout the change process. This thesis explores sociological, historical and theological-interpretive factors that have created this situation. Data show that most ministry to women is social, child-care or service oriented, yet many women desire excellent teaching, experiences in spiritual formation and development of their gifts. These East-West partnerships face many challenges: older Mission Boards who have little local experience and firmly entrenched approaches of the Venn and Williams three-self model, cultural challenges, leadership changes, historical challeges, and financial challenges. How healthy is a partnership model? What exaclty is a partnership model? Which scriptures address a partnership model? Why will older mission strategies of the past not work in the Balkans? Are these partnerships helpful or hurtful? What is most needed to progress? These are questions addressed in this thesis. Drawing from Augustine, from church planters in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), and from my own experience, I propose that the three central themes of mainline new church preaching are: hospitality, teaching, and prophetic proclamation. This thesis also breaks new ground by incorporating newcomers/seekers into the sermon formation process. Consumerism is analyzed through its history and through its present key features, including the loss of certainty, individualism, choice, consumption, and commodification. By looking at individualism, branding and shopping, identity in a consumeristic world is examined. The answer lies in the adoption of practices, as defined by Alistair McIntyre. Hospitality, which is given as a model of practice, is examined starting from its biblical roots up to current proposals.
