A handcarved figurine of a shepherd with a sheep on his shoulders conveys the humility and strengths of the Great Shepherd. The olive woodcarving embodies this project by symbolizing the return of the lost sheep.  The shoulders of the shepherd represent the achievement of the goal of discovery and equipping of a recovery team ultimately engaging in visitation of the church dropout. The central thesis of this paper is that a vision and ministry, no matter how impressive, cannot belong to one leader but must be embodied in the community through its leadership.  Grounded in the theology of Howard Thurman, it calls attention to the pervasive injustices of living in a society of white privilege, racial prejudice, segregation, and discrimination, and to our blindness as members of Christian congregations within this society. Yet today in our increasingly urbanized world, young people are less able to experience the wilderness.  Young people today are unsure how to engage a world of poverty, religions, violence, and clashing civilizations.  Thus, young leaders need reflective dialogue toward a theology of apprenticeship for missions.  In the past 15 years the author has spent nearly a year in the wilderness with groups of young people. She uses narrative and her work in an intentional small group to tell the story of preaching as pastor in a predominately-white congregation. She concludes that a pastor from the margins can effectively preach to a mainstream congregation if she understands the gifts of her traditions, attends to relationship building and the needs of the community, and stands on the promises of God.
