To be successful, preachers need to consider what makes for effective and helpful example stories, because stories can be a window to the core idea of a sermon. However, many preachers have difficulty finding good example stories when they prepare sermons. This project examines selected passages in Paul's writings from a homiletic perspective. Paul's metaphors and analogies have some recommendable elements and provide standards for selecting example stories. Paul's marriage and potter analogies in Romans and the planting and running metaphors in 1 Corinthians are excellent examples for contemporary preachers to follow. Two Korean pastors who are very famous for their impressive and influential sermons also have distinctive example stories within their sermons. There are some commonalities and differences among them. This project examines the value of Paul's metaphors and analogies and compares them with the two Korean preachers selected in order to develop some guidelines Korean preachers can follow in selecting example stories."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e7e2d3cb-fc51-4ba5-a7fd-d43f3f8c150b"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131797805858816,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:53:12.866Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:29:38Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:47:37Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"18721b34-a881-4115-9a42-7eeea7de89a0","accessControl_ssim":["69cc5e24-6b7b-4d15-9293-7b18121556b8"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Contextualizing the house church as one method of fostering a church planting movement (CPM) in Colorado"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:29:37Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:50:44Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["45a62711-1b7c-48e0-8cbc-de5675f786fe"],"hasLease_ssim":["0bea1a68-1a73-455b-93a6-94a4019b5789"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Allan Karr"],"year_tesim":["2006"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Mark H Edlund"],"keyword_tesim":["Campus ministry"],"publisher_tesim":["Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Colorado--Denver","House churches"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The thesis of this project is that an existing small group sponsored by an established campus-based church can be intentionally morphed into a stand-alone house church saturating the surrounding community with the gospel. This study focuses on the perspectives on women in the church context that devalue women as imperfect and inferior beings in relationship with others. It addresses the problematic situation of gender relations in the Korean church context with a critical analysis, and shows how cultural and social norms concerning women are deeply embedded in the Korean church context. It also reveals how the problematic situation has been reinforced by its association with, and acceptance of, fundamentalist theology. This study draws on transformative learning theory as a way of fashioning a new educational model for Korean women in the church. Even though the educational theory of transformative education has been developed and applied in various educational contexts, it has rarely been discussed in a faith-based context. This project shows how it is possible to utilize transformative education theory in a faith-based context, through a case study with a class at a Bible institute. This study also draws upon narrative pedagogy as a practical principle to create a religious educational model for Korean women in the church context. Theological discussion centered on Minjung theology particularly, with the notion of shin-myung, is important in order to contextualize the narrative framework in the Korean context. As a powerful tool for promoting perspective transformations in the church, reading the sacred story, the Bible, is discussed with feminist and post-colonial perspectives. Integrating these theoretical discussions, the religious education model for Korean women is grounded on the group experiences with Korean women in two different settings, church and school. This model can initiate perspective transformation, not only in the women themselves but also in others. The educational experiences in the women's group provide possibilities and hopes for bringing meaningful changes in Korean women's context."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e7e2d3cb-fc51-4ba5-a7fd-d43f3f8c150b"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132115963740160,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:58:16.284Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:29:29Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:16:59Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"12ae59bb-9a2d-4b38-ae0f-a4168ef0806b","accessControl_ssim":["5c214a13-cb88-4a78-92d8-f2083beda4fb"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Preaching as discipleship: moving the congregation to live into and demonstrate Christian practices"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:29:28Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:39:59Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["69cfa084-2021-43fa-b82d-dc4401f4e09a"],"hasLease_ssim":["3199c1a7-e606-428f-8176-888a6c0d6b7b"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago"],"advisor_tesim":["Craig A Satterlee"],"year_tesim":["2006"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Sandra L Chrostowski"],"publisher_tesim":["Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago"],"subject_tesim":["Faith development","Galilee Lutheran Church (Pewaukee, Wis)"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This thesis explores the issue, 'How does preaching move listeners to live into a discipleship model of ministry, towards greater demonstration of Christian practices as defined by the Vision Statement of Galilee Lutheran Church?' Because stories and storytelling are integral parts of our psychology, narrative theology offers a particularly powerful way of illustrating and teaching important Christian doctrine. It is important to note that stories should never be summarized or reduced to a 'core meaning' when used for teaching or pastoral care and counseling, as this runs the risk of allowing the storyteller's own views and prejudices to overpower the deeper meaning of the story itself. For this reason, all narrative theology should be based on the unabridged, unadulterated story in its purest form. Theologies of the cross, by emphasizing the suffering and death of Jesus, run the risk of condoning abusive behavior and portray Jesus Christ as a figure who intentionally seeks suffering and death as part of the act of redemption, minimizing the responsibility of the repressive society that demanded his death. By emphasizing obedience to the Lord, these theologies can serve to maintain an oppressive status quo at the cost of innocent life. The project argues that a more healthy theology can be formulated based on the psychoanalytical theory of individuation, as formulated by Carl G. Jung. Bu using the example of 'The Story of Shim Cheong,' the dissertation shows how traditional, life-affirming tales can be distorted to serve the ends of a repressive patriarchal society. Sacrifice is not something we can demand a person to offer solely for the benefit of others. A true sacrifice can only come from someone who has reached the goal of individuation. It must be motivated by love and always serves to strengthen and enrich the giver. In that light, a new definition of sacrifice is formulated."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e7e2d3cb-fc51-4ba5-a7fd-d43f3f8c150b"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132170484449280,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:59:08.279Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:28:56Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:18:20Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"3fcc979b-baea-4d71-ae57-223e275d5bbb","accessControl_ssim":["67d4438b-1226-409b-8872-b8045c53d5b8"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Buddhist resources in pastoral care"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:28:54Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:58:57Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["0756b850-b89b-459e-be11-9061c6acbdaa"],"hasLease_ssim":["afeffac3-b654-4a49-aae0-ef1e1c5a3b6b"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"advisor_tesim":["Brita L Gill-Austern"],"year_tesim":["2006"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Adele Smith-Penniman"],"publisher_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"subject_tesim":["Four Noble Truths","Interfaith relations","Christianity","Linehan, Marsha","Pastoral theology","Buddhism","Kabat-Zinn, Jon","Segal, Zindel V, 1956-"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Increasingly clinicians incorporate Buddhist understandings in healing, and many of these tenets can be extended as well to pastoral care. The English mystery cycles are seen, first as a predecessor to Shakespeare and second as a source of information about medieval culture. This author's process began with a review of this research by theater historians in the 1960s and 70s, then moved to analysis by medieval scholars of the last twenty years who are searching the mystery plays for archaeological evidence of custom and social change. This research reveals the medieval dramatist's transformation of the stories of scripture by setting the gospel narratives in medieval life. It identifies techniques including contemporary costumes, dialogue that deals with the actors' concerns and questions, and biblical characters transformed into contemporary figures. The lay Christians 'locally incarnated' the Bible by bringing human flesh to biblical story and taking their own place in salvation history. The identification of these plays as ludus (a Latin term related to the games of the arena) encouraged the establishment of a new 'field of play.' This project adapts the techniques of the medieval mystery plays to communicate the good news in the 21st century through contemporary mystery plays. The second stage of the research was to create 'fields of play' in the 21st century and encourage youth and adults to 'locally incarnate' the biblical story in their own lives. A reader's theater group was introduced to the techniques of the mystery plays, enjoyed discussing doctrine, and wrote their own mystery play. A congregation enlivened their worship, discovered drama gifts among their members, and grew in their appreciation of scripture and how it could speak to their lives. A youth arts camp had fun exploring scripture, a first for many of them, and improvised dialogue that dealt with their own issues and questions. This author concludes that using tableaux and improvised dialogue to explore biblical story encourages today's Christians to view their own lives through the lens of scripture. Playing in drama through these plays leads people into deeper exploration of what they believe about their own faith. Finally, performing mystery plays in worship invited congregations to adopt the biblical narratives as their own story."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["63ab0f5c-c5fb-460c-b8ba-dd2fd91f7145"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133479299186688,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:19:56.463Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":13083,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"Dissertation","hits":46,"label":"Dissertation"},{"value":"Thesis","hits":9,"label":"Thesis"},{"value":"D.Min.
