The purpose of this project was to discover factors that contribute to the resiliency and retention of missionaries who have gone through traumatic events in their missionary career in Africa and yet continue to serve there. This qualitative study used narrative methodology and involved 35 interviews with missionaries who had experienced various traumas. Four factors that respondents brought into their trauma event were: a strong personal conviction, a preparedness from birth, words from God, and sturdy relationships. Four factors which emerged from the trauma were experiencing the keeper side of God, hearing authoritative leadership voices, quickly finding new ministry foci, and benefiting from functional networks. Three unexpected factors from the trauma event were a less encumbered way of living, embracing sudden transitions as doors to new ministries, and a reshaped life for future ministry."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Trinity Evangelical Divinity School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c654e922-76d0-4427-ac29-e286b7997781"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799717425019617280,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:18:05.030Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:54:09Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:05:42Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"b199429a-48de-49af-a310-e6c930775ab7","accessControl_ssim":["f3a3db56-70ec-4653-a601-aaba59c0bc94"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Building a foundation for the development of a personal Christian faith in children"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:54:08Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:15:28Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["ca29e2a9-26c0-49d1-81ac-5645eade25a2"],"hasLease_ssim":["8c46ff57-bdf9-41d9-be4c-1800ff95041c"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Southern Methodist University"],"advisor_tesim":["Edwin Edward Sylvest"],"year_tesim":["2006"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Gloria Lynne Youngblood"],"publisher_tesim":["Southern Methodist University"],"subject_tesim":["Christian education of children","Fowler, James W","Child development"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Children need a foundation in the Christian faith from earliest childhood in order to gain the most benefit from the confirmation experience that is the common practice in United Methodism. This qualitative action research project document describes the actual establishment of a congregational-based CPE program in Fargo, North Dakota. Using this information and data drawn from the experience of five other founding supervisors of congregational-based programs, fourteen developmental steps and seven founding principles were found to be necessary in the development of a viable congregational-based CPE center. They form the basis for a feasible model for the establishment of a new congregational-based CPE center."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["United Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["f0f9c284-37b6-440c-96ab-39e6509e82ee"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129700110696449,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:19:52.348Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:54:09Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:23:59Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"e311ef5c-cb4f-42b7-9e35-2a2fb480af3a","accessControl_ssim":["25ee0a65-d1af-4bfc-afd0-08a574e8d239"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["From invisibility and death to visibility and new life: a revitalization process"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:54:08Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:37:30Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["eb988dc0-d86c-439d-a3ff-85809f88a64d"],"hasLease_ssim":["002a8c9a-927d-44df-a799-d362332e64dd"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["United Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Sky Kershner","Charles E Hendricks"],"year_tesim":["2005"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Eileen M Dumire"],"keyword_tesim":["Church and community"],"publisher_tesim":["United Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Asbury United Methodist Church (Charleston, W Va)"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This action research project, conducted by Asbury United Methodist Church in Charleston, West Virginia, develops a process to help churches become more visible to their neighborhood and show signs of new life.
