One of the major needs that must be addressed in the Christian community and in the local church is the mentoring of Christian men in family leadership. Even when men lead at work, in the community and other places, often they do not effectively lead at home.  A partial remedy for this need is to place these men into accountability groups.  One such group will be formed with five men who desire to develop their spiritual leadership skills.  The purpose of the twelve sixty-minute sessions is for the men to grow in their spiritual leadership ability.  A part of the information for each session will be submitted by thirty or more spiritually mature Christian men who will comment on the kind  of spiritual leadership they practice in their families. It is hoped that the principles that are taught to the men will be caught by the spirit of the project leader and the other men involved in the advisory group. The uniqueness of this project is that it offers parishioners an opportunity to use story sharing and the grieving process to deal with the change and transition associated with this move. Focus group sessions and 'town-hall' meetings provide opportunities for sharing and growth. The situation reflected across the church is that clergy and vestries are not always prepared and equipped to plan and set goals with confidence that they are acting consistently with what they believe God is calling the congregation to be and to do.  In response to this perceived need, I have developed a design that is structured to encourage and enable discernment and planning by congregations.  This project has been advanced by the knowledge that many among the clergy and congregations in our diocese clearly recognize the importance of scheduling time apart from regular daily demands in order to listen for the voice of the Lord through a structured process as they plan for the future. Theological concepts that God speaks to his people, leading and guiding them, undergirded this project.  Biblical references substantiating that the Lord speaks to his people were incorporated throughout the process.  Psychological concepts that informed the thesis included the awareness and application of systems theory as presented by Dr. Edwin Friedman and the Rev. Peter L. Steinke.  This theory was particularly helpful in recognizing behavior associated with the prospect of change and the anticipated increase in anxiety. Insight was gained into the way patients viewed their health problem and prepared for entering the hospital for surgery.  The impact of surgery, the effect of anesthetic, and complications in the healing process were explored. Patients saw their surgery not just as an isolated event, but as part of their life experience.
