Over a seven-week period basic principles and practices of prayer were taught through Sunday morning worship and small group experiences. A short video introduced each weekly theme in the small groups and participants were given a workbook to personalize and record their questions, prayers and growth. Group study focuses on cherished practices of the church, such as baptism, weekly observance of the Lord's Supper, and inclusive ministry. Critical dialogue among all the group moves the group to lift up specific ways that the church can practice in its mission what it practices in its worship. This project succeeds in heightening awareness among the group that worship practices necessitate outreach in mission. It reveals how the 'being'--heart, soul, mind--of the pastor is reflected in the 'being' of the people the pastor leads. A primary premise of the paper is that pastors focus their attention more on 'doing' than 'being.'  Pastors are searching for help and hope, attempting to find the program, plan, or method that will bring growth to the church. However, the power and work of God rests in the 'being' of His people through the indwelling work of the Holy Spirit. Programs, plans, and methods only aid the work of the Spirit. The thesis begins with the statement of the problem of how pastors misplace their primary focus on 'doing' activities. It reveals the scriptural truths about 'being,' and reveals the 'being' of God's leaders throughout the Bible. It then diagnoses the influence society has on the pastor with regards to 'being' and 'doing.' The work contains a chapter on the pastor and how to evaluate 'being,' and concludes with biblical and ministry reflections to assist the pastor and church in applying the truths of the thesis. The thesis reflects the ministry application at Chino Valley Community Church, and includes extended ministry opportunities beyond the church. The problem stated is that currently the two processes are alienated from the church's mission as a result of institutionalism. The method of research was to gather information from three major fields: sociology, history, and theology/ecclesiology. The research substantiated the existence of institutionalism and its negative effect upon consultation and the itineracy. It presents reviews of literature on Christian leadership and a summary and analysis of case study research on two senior pastors in southeastern Pennsylvania. The hypothesis defines as effective Christian leader as one who maximizes his strengths, minimizes his limitations, develops in Christ-like character, and influences others to accomplish a common vision. Interviews using a standardized questionnaire, an evaluation tool, church records and documentation, and personal observation yield information that was analyzed and interpreted for support or non-support of the hypothesis. It addresses the need for advance planning of sermons by pastors without the aid of the Lectionary. The author suggests that the quality and relevancy of sermons preached can be enhanced when pastors exercise the discipline of planning a preaching program in light of long-term goals for their churches. This thesis addresses several theological questions behind planning sermons in advance. It also contains a survey of literature currently available on subjects related to sermon planning, the Christian year, creativity, and church planning. Included in this work is a chapter containing a manual for planning a preaching program. Featured is a suggested methodology for developing a preaching program that is based upon a preacher's vision and goals for a congregation. A six-stage approach to planning is presented as well as a step-by-step process for planning a sermon series. The project will be conducted in three phases.  The first phase will include five Sunday morning messages addressing the nature of organizational change in the life of churches, ministry through spiritual gifts, and the development of team ministries.  The messages will discuss ministry structures found in Scripture and the basic operational principles by which they function.  The second phase will focus on five Sunday evening seminars.  The seminars will examine Sunday morning sermons in light of Garden Oaks Baptist Church's committee structure with a view toward developing a structure based on a team-ministry approach. Through interaction and dialogue, seminar participants will evaluate Garden Oaks Baptist Church's committee structure and pursue development of a team-ministry structure based on one's spiritual gifts.  The third phase will be designed to enlist a study team of twelve people from participants of the first and second phases.
