It is an attempt to develop pastoral images that will authentically engage the North American cultural context. Cultural changes have implications for the pastor and the ministry of the church. In this paper, three cultural denials are discussed. Materialism has led to the denial of transcendence; individualism has led to the denial of community; anti-intellectualism has led to the denial of thinking. Three cultural quests are addressed. The existential cry for meaning is seen in the quest for transcendence in society; the individualistic cry for belonging is observed in the quest for community; the multicultural cry for identity is seen in the quest for pluralism. This study offers four pastoral images for consideration: a Listening Conversationalist, a Prophetic Subversive, a Pedagogical Guide, and a Co-Sufferer. These pastoral images also have significance for those involved in teaching on the college level. Specifically, the image of the teacher as a Friend is addressed in this study and the implications of that image for the educational process."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b5eba5c2-141b-4673-9689-2f9720736859"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129423602253824,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:15:28.648Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T19:34:05Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:57:53Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"4986ff78-57e0-4550-9b6a-ca14344e3477","accessControl_ssim":["a49a9095-5d76-4466-9ac8-0435b44891cf"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A biblical model for church growth through laity: Trinity Baptist Church, Newport, Tennessee"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T19:34:05Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:17:16Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["b00a860d-427b-4200-a237-ba231850e7b0"],"hasLease_ssim":["665719fd-508c-4807-8502-80d679540f7b"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Southern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Timothy K Beougher"],"year_tesim":["1999"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Jerry W Nash"],"publisher_tesim":["Southern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Laity","Church growth","Trinity Baptist Church (Newport, Tenn)"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The purpose of this ministry project was to develop a program of assimilating newcomers into the congregation of Trinity Baptist Church which would result in both the spiritual and numerical growth of the congregation. God first called Abraham with a promise that through his blessing, he could be a blessing to all the people of the world. Next God called the people of Israel. When it failed to fulfill the covenant, God established the Church, and the people of God became anyone who would accept the covenant of passing on the blessings of God. While these rituals have value and fill key functions in society, they are at the same time troublesome. The lack of proper medical equipment and training in performing actual circumcision, as well as accompanying teachings which encourage sexual promiscuity, makes these ceremonies physically, spiritually, and morally dangerous. The AIDS epidemic in Malawi can also be partly traced to these rituals. This study seeks to find a Christian answer which preserves the value of these practices while avoiding the problems connected with them. The circumcision rituals and beliefs of the Lomwe and Yao tribes are described. Based on personal interviews of people who have been directly involved with the circumcisions, this dissertation details the activities which take place before, during, and after the circumcision, along with the teachings which are passed on to the circumcision initiates during the ceremony. In order to provide a comparative basis, the Old Testament and New Testament circumcision practices and teachings are also described. The relationship of biblical circumcision to the Old and New Covenants between God and His people is especially emphasized. Through a contrast of the Malawian and Jewish circumcision rituals, this study highlights the dangers which traditional Lomwe and Yao circumcisions pose to the social and spiritual structures in Malawi. The current Malawian trends in AIDS, physiological injuries, and moral decline indicate that, unless the circumcision issues are addressed, the social and cultural conditions in Malawi will only continue to worsen. The SDA church must allow and encourage the Lomwe and Yao people to address the dangers of circumcision in a culturally sensitive manner which preserves their heritage while avoiding physical dangers and moral decline. This study presents a six-step process of change which will enable the SDA church and the Malawian people to cooperatively explore options and make plans for dealing with the dangerous aspects of the circumcision rituals and teachings. This study concludes with a series of recommendations through which the SDA church could encourage its leaders and members, the Lomwe and Yao communities, and the Malawian government to cooperatively equip the Malawian people with the information and skills they need to improve and preserve their society. Possible substitution practices are also suggested."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Andrews University"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4b1d9df2-25d6-46f6-a889-1871c277d61c"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135253443641344,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:48:08.419Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":13083,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"Dissertation","hits":46,"label":"Dissertation"},{"value":"Thesis","hits":9,"label":"Thesis"},{"value":"D.Min.
