Significant gaps exist between, on the one hand, the emphasis placed on developing leadership qualities and skills during Capuchin friars’ formation and, on the other, the degree to which such skills are called for in educational administrative ministries. In support of these claims, I apply Richard Osmer’s method of descriptive-empirical analysis – examining experience, tradition, and pastoral response – to a case study involving the experience of Capuchin principals in Ethiopia. Based on a close examination of their experiences, I recommend the institutionalization of programmatic educational leadership training modules for friar school principals. I also call for changes in the friars’ initial and ongoing formation programs to increase the quality of educational leadership and managerial skills in order to raise their leadership qualities and make them more capable of executing their responsibilities. This study might help the Capuchin Order in Ethiopia in identifying the type of formation, quality, knowledge, and skills friars need to be effective principals in the Capuchin schools."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Catholic Theological Union"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b51273d2-7ff5-4ecb-af24-64508c2367ad"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129224654880768,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:12:18.918Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T20:13:58Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:18:27Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"dca155af-4ddd-4655-94e9-8dac0f348908","accessControl_ssim":["de94c46d-a998-4f33-8033-d9d134bc1c1c"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Growing the Church Through Catholic Education: Defining Catholic Identity in Archdiocese of Chicago Catholic Schools and Employing Data for Improving Catholic School Mission and Culture"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T20:13:57Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:26:39Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["d1fa3645-0c08-4d6d-b145-6b932c218e6e"],"hasLease_ssim":["8767f41f-c91b-4b57-8c94-141677c7a8c4"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"discipline_tesim":["Educating for Witness"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Catholic Theological Union"],"advisor_tesim":["Christina Zaker D.Min."],"year_tesim":["2023"],"location_tesim":["United States","Illinois"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. As the universal Church enters its third millennium of existence, magisterial leaders are calling upon communities of faith to discern the mission of Catholic institutions and their role in serving God’s Church and the world. If Catholic schools are to be successful in their mission, it is critical that clerical and lay school leaders align on what is meant by the term “Catholic identity” as well as identify shared characteristics of Catholic identity in faith-based school communities. With this in mind, several questions are raised: What, exactly, defines the identity and work of a “Catholic” school in contemporary times? Can interpretation of “Catholic identity” differ from one school to another? Who has the authority to set benchmarks for Catholic school identity? In what ways can Catholic identity be quantitatively measured to advance school improvement and deepen alignment to the mission of the Church? To what extent can we really know if our efforts to share the Gospel through Catholic education are successfully contributing to the mission of the modern Church? This project aims to engage Catholic school leaders in dialogue around definitions of Catholic identity and how school stakeholder survey data can be utilized to set and achieve school improvement goals around deepening the Catholic identity, mission, and culture of schools within the Archdiocese of Chicago."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Catholic Theological Union"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b51273d2-7ff5-4ecb-af24-64508c2367ad"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129614058258432,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:18:30.282Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T18:38:23Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:16:39Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"b2637ad2-ddb1-4af3-a27a-cf81e6f99db0","accessControl_ssim":["5c13223a-4549-4ac1-81b6-503dededdde7"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Let all Who Are Hungry Come and Eat - 'In Good Faith': Intentional Interreligious Encounter and the Spirit of Hospitality"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T18:38:21Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:17:07Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["1cce28f8-7a74-4e89-a227-660dc9da3467"],"hasLease_ssim":["ccf2f9f8-766a-40a6-ae81-29a5c71f35a2"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"discipline_tesim":["Educating for Witness"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Catholic Theological Union"],"advisor_tesim":["Edward Foley Cap. Examined through the theological quests for truth, love and peace, participants reflected on their experiences, placing those experiences in conversation with sacred texts and images from their home traditions. T'shuvah, the Jewish theological act of turning toward the holy, is explored as a transtemporal, liberative and conciliatory gesture, through which the program might create change in the participants' sense of self and other. Reflective storytelling as a method is explored in depth. The author theorizes that t’shuvah did in fact occur, according to participant interviews. T’shuvah in an interreligious dialogue setting may occur in part because of: the phenomenon of multiple “Us-es,” according to the neurobiology theories of Robert Sapolsky; contact theories through dialogue; and the structure of gatherings proposed by Priya Parker. Ethical considerations of intentional interreligious engagement, especially historical wounds and vulnerability, are also discussed. The thesis-project used semi-structured, one on one interviews, and applied a novel, four step Jewish theological reflection method conceived by the author: p’shat, thick descriptions of “what happened”; d’rash, placing those experiences in dialogue with sacred texts and images; t’shuvah, how the experiences may have created individual and cosmic repair among the dialogue partners; and k’dushah, exploring whether and how participation in the program translated into action in the world outside the program. Framing the interviews through the lens of “participant as storyteller” is explored in detail as a potential contribution to sacralizing the lived experience of the program. The rich imageries of shared ancestry, meeting at table, fellow travelers and learning in the presence of the other inform the conclusion that the intentional interreligious engagement of this program may create tikkunim (repairs) in both individual and group to group relationships among Jews, Christians and Muslims."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Catholic Theological Union"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b51273d2-7ff5-4ecb-af24-64508c2367ad"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129501865869312,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:16:43.287Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T18:23:53Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:09:39Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"28ad825a-205f-4bab-8513-868b5b9fe98f","accessControl_ssim":["ec28280a-7e2b-44e4-a0e7-fd56dd70402d"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The Role of the Roman Catholic Catechists in Shaping Adolescents Equipped to Address De-Womanization in Igbo Culture of Nigeria"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T18:23:52Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:19:28Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["1fcb5376-f7b1-40a0-98b5-d2d4af4a5039"],"hasLease_ssim":["2baa9d38-e9f6-48b3-914b-0993b40d2cac"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"discipline_tesim":["Educating for Witness"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Catholic Theological Union"],"advisor_tesim":["Edward Foley Prof Ph.D."],"year_tesim":["2019"],"location_tesim":["Nigeria"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. This thesis-project looks at this manifestation as it unfolds as the legacy of apostolic women religious in the United States. The legacy of each participating congregation was described as a mission or more specifically as the mission of Jesus. It has also been the experience of these women religious that legacy is most tangible in the relationships and trust they built with their students, coworkers, and community members with whom they worked and partnered. The legacy of apostolic women religious is a witness to the gospel message that took root as Christianity two thousand years ago. The thesis-project begins by exploring the legacy of Jesus, as well as the historical context that furthers God’s mission through the lives of three historical women – Hildegard of Bingen, Catherine of Siena, and Angela Merici. The research then flows into the brief history of the Ursuline Sisters in the United States. Reviewing the pre and post-Vatican II eras and their influence on religious life helps lay a foundation upon which apostolic women today have been formed. The primary data was gathered through focus group discussions involving seven congregations consisting of thirty-five apostolic women religious. Their comments are summarized first by congregation in order to maintain the richness within each discussion, then by main themes, and concluded with a reflection on the legacy of these women as it finds meaning through the Gospel of John.Legacy has many definitions, but what surfaced most prominently was legacy as ministry, and the ministries are what define the women. Legacy efforts included developing relationships, education, healing, inclusivity, and service. All of these works could be imagined as the ongoing narrative of the Gospels, epitomized in the Beloved Disciple."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Catholic Theological Union"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b51273d2-7ff5-4ecb-af24-64508c2367ad"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129017627181056,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:09:01.481Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T18:20:53Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:12:23Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"649afb3f-2df2-4175-aab4-3b04947e47bf","accessControl_ssim":["c1741642-0efa-4f71-b285-452edea9f79d"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Domestic Violence In Vietnam:A Pastoral Program To Equip Church Ministers For Accompaniment"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T18:20:52Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:04:36Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["caef141e-ce83-41b5-b2f0-c4f0ee04424f"],"hasLease_ssim":["7dd2c2d2-95df-40af-b743-cba40f61c418"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"discipline_tesim":["Educating for Witness"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Catholic Theological Union"],"advisor_tesim":["Dawn Nothwehr Ph.D."],"year_tesim":["2019"],"location_tesim":["Vietnam"],"resource_type_tesim":["Dissertation"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Sr. ANN DIEP NGUYEN, OP"],"subject_tesim":["Catholic Church","Christian education of adults","Communities--Religious aspects","Bible--Theology"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Domestic violence is a real issue in Vietnam. This thesis-project is an effort to propose a pastoral program to equip Church ministers for accompaniment. The author, mainly, uses the methodology of Richard Osmer’s as primary framework and, simultaneously, integrates a number of components from Poling and Miller to strengthen the performance of this thesis-project. In the process, this study, by conducting qualitative interviews of Church ministers, examines first, if the Church ministers are aware of the domestic violence situation, and then, what skills they may need in responding to this issue. As a result, this study acknowledges some insights from practical, socio-cultural, theological, and pastoral perspectives. Under this understanding, this thesis-project suggests some recommendations for a pastoral response to domestic violence, and provides a possible pastoral program as a way to equip Church ministers in assisting women who experience domestic violence in the context of Vietnam."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Catholic Theological Union"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b51273d2-7ff5-4ecb-af24-64508c2367ad"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129232702701568,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:12:26.593Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T18:20:41Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:15:25Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"9ad8d803-de0f-4458-8c06-840369bb3101","accessControl_ssim":["1310c233-6982-4144-80cc-d64b078888e3"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The Educational Challenges Of School Principals: A Study Of Capuchin Friars Working As School Principals In Ethiopia."],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T18:20:40Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:39:42Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["3ef848ad-88ce-4c82-a2ad-78e5bcff714b"],"hasLease_ssim":["e03fa732-b6c2-4dd7-a253-2203656c5fb1"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"discipline_tesim":["Educating for Witness"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Catholic Theological Union"],"advisor_tesim":["Roger P Schroeder Th.D."],"year_tesim":["2019"],"resource_type_tesim":["Dissertation"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Worku Yohannes Gebre"],"subject_tesim":["Catholic Church","Christian education--Teaching methods","Leadership--Religious aspects"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This thesis-project discovers educational leadership values, knowledge, and skills that can contribute to the increased effectiveness of Capuchin friar school principals at Capuchin Schools in Ethiopia. Furthermore, the study attempted to suggest some sound and effective methods of communicating those discovered values, knowledge, skills, and educational leadership training to Capuchin friar school principals. Though Capuchin friars school principals succeeded in some aspects of school administration, they faced several challenges due to lack of educational leadership knowledge. Therefore, in the global culture where values, knowledge, and skills are rapidly changing it’s important for friars to attain an in-depth educational leadership knowledge.
