First, this dissertation demonstrates God's preparatory activity in general revelation. The first voyagers to Hawaii had a general knowledge of a supreme being. Second, this dissertation demonstrates God's use of historical events to present special revelation to the Hawaiians through the missionaries of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions. Finally, this dissertation demonstrates the application of research findings toward the writer's present ministry at Puna Baptist Church. These research findings will revitalize Puna Baptist Church's evangelistic strategy. The new evangelistic strategy will utilize the historical fact that the first Hawaiian voyagers had a general knowledge of a later monotheistic supreme being, and this evangelistic strategy will reveal that the religious system was imposed upon the Hawaiians by a foreign entity. This project contends that Christian blessings can be given in a traditional Hawaiian form that would enable believers to connect with unchurched friends and neighbors and thereby proclaim the blessing that is the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It was found that in the experience of the volunteers, giving blessing opens up deeper discussions with coworkers, friends and neighbors and that such discussions can and do lead to sharing the good news of God's blessing. The study includes these components: 1) understanding evangelism; 2) a biblical perspective on evangelism; 3) building a case for the use of story; 4) story and Hawai'i's multi-cultural people; 5) evangelism approaches in Hawai'i; 6) story: a new paradigm for evangelism; and 7) talk-story evangelism: a practical evangelism approach for Hawai'i. Christianity has a unique theological contribution to individuals at the time of death.  That contribution, centered on the resurrection event, is enhanced when it is presented in forms that are understandable to ethnic people in non-Christian traditions who live in close proximity to one another.
