A primary premise of the work is that the systemic nature of the dichotomy is expressed in most aspects of Christianity, decreasing the potential of individual Christians to effectively live the Christian life and do the work of ministry that Christ has left for his church. A historical analysis traces the origin of the dichotomy and how the dichotomy has been codified by church structures, constitutions, and traditions. The Pauline epistles are employed to illustrate the point that the whole church has been equipped by the Holy Spirit to know and to do the theology that is proclaimed in the scriptures. Peter Senge's idea of a Learning Organization is used as an applicable methodology for mending the dichotomy. Its more horizontal outline helps the church to sanction the laity as equal partners and fellow leaders in the ministry of the church and reduces the church's tendency to reproduce chronic multitudes of perpetual followers. A question the thesis poses is developed around the idea of whether the Christian church will allow a division that looks and oftentimes feels so much like the outlawed Jim Crow laws in this country to continue to thrive, or, whether the church will submit the horrific practice of the dichotomy to the oneness of the church inaugurated by the blood of Jesus Christ."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131431343226880,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:47:23.380Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:54:41Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:39:48Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"59ebb444-7d0c-4042-881b-6e3718a2d690","accessControl_ssim":["60988a03-24b3-4ca6-a08d-75168822f429"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Training leaders: a systems approach to leadership development"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:54:40Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:46:26Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["ea125594-4bf1-46e2-96b9-8c931f29c1da"],"hasLease_ssim":["d7bae82f-9f4e-42fb-a810-c305c6b5690d"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Steven W Klipowicz"],"year_tesim":["2002"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Michael B Pawelke"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Leadership--Religious aspects--Christianity","Organizational learning","System theory"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The motivation for this project grows out of the need for a leadership development tool for new and existing leaders to serve in a local church. This tool will address numerous areas of leadership character and competencies; however, of particular concern is the training of leaders to think, learn, and function systematically, acknowledging the complexity of the church as a living organization as it functions in turbulent times. All too often leaders merely emulate the leadership styles and techniques of the marketplace or corporate culture. This project will make a careful study of a biblical theology of the church and of leadership and compare it with the growing data on systems theory and organizational learning theory. This project will explore the use of systems theory as a means of understanding organizational design with the view to aiding leaders in their leadership function. A distinct analysis will be made of Peter Senge's model of systems thinking. The focus was to create community through a process of dialogue in an effort to define the meaning of patient focused care. As the organization was undergoing considerable crisis (provoked in part by fiscal restraints at the time), a special emphasis was placed on organizational grief. The two domains engaged in the study were from organizational development, specifically the work of Peter Senge as it applies to organizational learning and pastoral ministry in the context of a Critical Care Unit in crisis. The findings validate the learning organization as a concept in support of change and empowerment. In addition, a theological/pastoral perspective, while recognizing the value of the organic, relational nature of organizational design, pointed to the need for the development of personal awareness, as an issue of capacity for relationship in organizational learning. As well, organizational grief was identified as a catalyst for dialogue as it enabled transformation in the organization, the creation of community and further, enabled a new definition of patient focused care."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791128051082330112,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:53:39.712Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:07:09Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:57:27Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"6a7f2e36-ad88-476f-87af-6c56f30bf44e","accessControl_ssim":["ccbb5261-68be-42b6-a4b5-c2eceda9ba6d"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Restoring our connections"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:07:04Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:15:12Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["3854c2fe-2fdd-4cdf-9c05-8c37c6cec9b2"],"hasLease_ssim":["32673ed0-adc0-403c-8b5d-9f377db507b9"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["McCormick Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Anna Case-Winters"],"year_tesim":["2002"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Barbara Jones-Hagedorn"],"publisher_tesim":["McCormick Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Organizational learning","Organizational change","Congregations"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["My thesis explores the loss of connection among congregations within our presbytery in this challenging postmodern time. Targeted congregations exhibit symptoms of decline that include: isolation from another and from surrounding neighborhoods; a loss of connection to our middle governing body; a fragmented organizational style; and a disconnection from our roots in Reformed faith. The loss of connection is also directly related to a loss of spiritual grounding. Three congregations have been selected from the targeted group. Hoped-for results are: restored connections with other congregations, with their own surrounding neighborhoods, and with the middle governing body. We hope congregations will recover their identity as Reformed disciples and experience spiritual growth through a process of transformation. Expected impediments include: obsolete assumptions that linger from a modern age; a loss of identity and purpose; isolation from the context of a larger church body; fear of differences; and grief. My intervention is an educational approach borrowed from Peter Senge's Learning Organizations.. Over a period of eight months 15 congregations are grouped into Pastoral Teams (pastors and congregational members). The Pastoral Teams are joined by Support Teams (members of the presbytery and contract staff). They work together to create ministry plans. The method involves a series of classes taught by the presbytery staff team. The ministry plans and interviews by the presbytery Council provide the basis for an evaluation. Support Teams will help the Pastoral Teams implement their plans."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["McCormick Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["7eda0323-a6d9-4fe2-807a-22620dd389a5"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791128293152391168,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:57:30.568Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T19:58:01Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:37:12Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"b4033afb-f3bb-4e91-904d-b323ec274eb0","accessControl_ssim":["3bac64da-0806-49a3-be94-336ddb5519a1"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Building a firm foundation: leading a church plant core group in a collaborative shared-vision process"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T19:58:01Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:19:52Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["39eef74a-0500-4005-97a2-c9acf8818cd7"],"hasLease_ssim":["1a51f98a-94c4-4680-9191-4219a4b8f308"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Burrell D Dinkins"],"year_tesim":["2000"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Bruce L Emmert"],"publisher_tesim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Organizational learning","Church group work"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The purpose of this ethnographic study was to assess the effectiveness of using a collaborative shared-vision process (as described by Peter Senge) in leading a core group of dedicated Christians recruited from several diverse United Methodist congregations in south Johnson county, Kansas in planting a new local church.
