The practice of these disciplines removes distractions and emphasizes the immanence and transcendence of God.  This encounter positions these leaders to apprehend, without mediation, God's idea of who they are, who they are becoming, and what they are to do in the world. Second, it describes an eighteen-month spiritual journey with eight lay women and men.  The discipline itself consists of three movements: centering, empowering, and serving.  A series of questionnaires was used to evaluate whether their commitment to ministry and mission deepened.
