Fifteen biblical texts support this form of prayer. Prayers from four mystics were examined. The situation reflected across the church is that clergy and vestries are not always prepared and equipped to plan and set goals with confidence that they are acting consistently with what they believe God is calling the congregation to be and to do.  In response to this perceived need, I have developed a design that is structured to encourage and enable discernment and planning by congregations.  This project has been advanced by the knowledge that many among the clergy and congregations in our diocese clearly recognize the importance of scheduling time apart from regular daily demands in order to listen for the voice of the Lord through a structured process as they plan for the future. Theological concepts that God speaks to his people, leading and guiding them, undergirded this project.  Biblical references substantiating that the Lord speaks to his people were incorporated throughout the process.  Psychological concepts that informed the thesis included the awareness and application of systems theory as presented by Dr. Edwin Friedman and the Rev. Peter L. Steinke.  This theory was particularly helpful in recognizing behavior associated with the prospect of change and the anticipated increase in anxiety. Insight was gained into the way patients viewed their health problem and prepared for entering the hospital for surgery.  The impact of surgery, the effect of anesthetic, and complications in the healing process were explored. Patients saw their surgery not just as an isolated event, but as part of their life experience. Analyzing the outcomes using both psychological and missiological theory, the author concludes that the rising trend in short-term mission service represents a fecund moment in the spiritual development of those who serve. Because of the logistical challenges of writing a totally original curriculum, a writing team was established to produce a series of lessons by editing and rewriting existing material published by Urban Ministries, Inc. This process resulted in an effective partnership producing a curriculum which was culturally sensitive and committed to excellence. Using the pro-active (qualitative) research method, the author examined works of modern fiction, developed a biblical/theological foundation, and led the group in six sessions based on films, short stories, and a novel. Working within a Free Church polity, it then suggests there is much the church can to do connect its pastors to the lines of support, authorization and accountability they need for healthier ministry. Its six chapters offer:  1. an introduction on the need to think in expanded terms about our connections; 2. a definition and description of pastoral isolation; 3. a history of the principle of autonomy and its misunderstanding; 4. an analysis of individualism and social virtue, and the personal and communal power needed to balance them; 5. a covenantal ecclesiology upon which to base its recommendations; and 6. a church-wide plan to provide the connecting elements required, the hallmark of which is a thorough recasting of the role and structure of UCC Associations.
