The purpose of this quantitative and qualitative research project was to determine those factors which contributed to this chasm between youth and church and make recommendations to address the problem.  Based on survey returns, barriers to youth participation were identified. The author has written a Bible study with eight lessons for middle stage Alzheimer's residents in the special care unit at The Hermitage in Richmond, Virginia. The Christ-hymn of Philippians 2 is the scriptural model upon which the experiment was originally conceived. A small group of interested persons was assembled for the project. Using interviews, journals, and other tools which were utilized to measure the resources (money, possessions, but also time, health, values, etc.) of the project participants, steps were determined which might aid others who are interested in fashioning a simpler way of living. Many churches are closed systems when it comes to dealing with its young. These 'closed systems' focus on the youth of their parishioners but fail to venture out into the community to those that are trapped in poor communities or ghettos. There is a widening gap between the 'haves' and 'have nots' in all of society and particularly amongst middle and lower class blacks. How does a middle class black church in the inner-city reach out to lower class youth surrounding its church? How do we empower the laity of a congregation to effectively reach unchurched youth? These are the questions that I will explore in this professional project. The vehicle we will use to get from Hip Hop back to the 'saving station' in the church is a contemporary outreach ministry called JAM (Jesus and Me). My goals were to 1) provide a place where young people could be transformed and feel safe, 2) create small groups that would allow the students to share more intimately and experience growth along with accountability, and 3) equip volunteers, both adult and youth, to carry out ministry to unchurched youth in the inner city. A special feature of this design involved participants in an imaginative exercise of narrating their life stories in the voice of God. Critics fear that contemporary worship creates religious consumers, not authentic disciples.  This thesis, however, maintains that deeply-rooted generational patterns, the impact of media, and the tensions between order and ardor, identity and relevance, and congregational culture and mission, have spurred a hunger for contemporary culture. This study makes a case for strategic planning as a useful approach to this problem.  The author develops a spiritually based process of strategic planning by borrowing components from business and non-profit sector models and fusing them with spiritual elements from the Faith tradition. The research was conducted through an ethnological approach using life history interviews of six women. A goal was to consider the women's orthodoxy as compared to orthodox Shiite doctrine. Implications for the evangelization of Lebanese Shiite women were also considered. A literature search from the gospels and other relevant sources, both ancient and contemporary, demonstrates this model. This model was designed and tested with adult ministry leaders. The categories of questions were derived from scripture and used in a fashion similar to that of the master teacher, Jesus. The result of the project is a model of interaction that is biblically supported, historically validated and experientially reliable. This model, when applied, enhances educational feedback and personal awareness and therefore leads to greater understanding. The value of learning is enhanced in all settings.
