Hebrews"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project attempts to answer the question: what does a new believer need to get started right in their walk with the Lord. The author examines the biblical text for clues, and looks closely at what groups who specialize in evangelism and discipleship use in their endeavors. The majority of groups, such as Campus Crusade for Christ, the Navigators, Billy Graham's organizations, and others, use follow-up material that focuses primarily on the spiritual disciplines of prayer, Bible study, church involvement, and stewardship. Yet the Scriptures indicate that the place to begin is with the foundational teachings referred to in Hebrews 6:1-2. Those basic teachings include--the doctrine of Christ, repentance from dead works, faith toward God, baptism, laying on of hands, resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. It is the conviction of the author that to achieve biblical results we should be following the biblical guidelines when working with new believers. That idea is both developed and supported in this paper. The evaluation was based on a review of the development processes and observations of the outcomes eight years later. The method of research entailed demographic analyses, use of questionnaires, interviews, and analyses of historic documents. Two competing cultures are identified in this study. The monolithic culture is composed of historic residents, while the pluralistic culture pertains to those new in the community. Two outreach services have been developed to penetrate these cultures. The first chapter includes a brief description of the biblical and theological data which shaped the church's disciple making ministry. The second chapter surveys the writings of three influential schools of thought in discipleship and how they interplayed with the author's views on discipleship. It also explains some historical factors which have affected the church's disciple making ministry. The third chapter records the steps taken to improve the church's ability to make disciples. of older established churches in small towns and/or rural areas. Often those of us who find ourselves in these situations look for a pre-packaged program that will simply plug into the current church. The research discloses that pre-packaged programs have a fatal flaw in that they are not transculturally friendly. It also discloses that it is better to develop a program based on the specific culture in which the church is located. Options are limited to the strategies suggested by Lyle Schaller in his book, 21 Bridges to the 21st Century.
