The praxis of the study is to apply the findings to a multiethnic church planting residency in the city of St. Louis. By 2025, St. Louis plans to be the fastest growing foreign-born city in America. The God of scripture is a missionary God who created all people in his image to walk with him and learn to practice his gentle and humble heart, by faith alone, in Christ alone, so all families will be fully known through grace alone. The church in America in the last twenty-five years has experienced the largest religious shift in history toward pluralism. This rapid social change has led to isolation, spiritual pride, and loneliness. Furthermore, as the global Christian epicenter moves to the Global South, God is sending migrant ministry leaders to the American church as multiethnic church planters. This study walks with sojourners to listen, learn, love, lament, and establish migrant ministry leaders for a diaspora movement of multiethnic church planters in St. Louis. The Bible speaks to immigration from the heart of God. The three main areas of literature review for the study are: diaspora mission, multiethnic church planting, and developing culturally intelligent leaders. This study utilized a qualitative design using semi-structured interviews with eleven migrant ministry leaders from various denominations in St. Louis, representing six continents. The interviews gathered data using four research questions to identify the challenges that migrant ministry leaders face as sojourners, how the four movements of God’s story of creation, fall, redemption, and restoration are lived in their ministry, the role of cultural intelligence in shaping the mature character of Christ, and how networks flourish in the immigrant communities of their city. The literature review focused on three key areas: the challenges multiethnic church planters face in rapid social change in America, the divine design of multiethnic motivations to practice the heart of Christ to love the sojourner, and the glory and affliction of those who network diaspora communities for the common good of the city. This study found three necessary components to multiethnic church planting in diaspora communities: the brokenness and beauty of diaspora mission, the glory and affliction of practicing the heart of Christ in multiethnic church planting, and the beautiful community of a diaspora network for the common good of the city. Related to these three components, this study also found that multiethnic ministry leaders face five major challenges: trust, trauma, isolation, conflict, and identity in cross cultural complexity. The Harvard study of five domains of Human Flourishing are also explored as a resource for building networked communities. The praxis of the study is to implement a residency training for migrant ministry leaders to seek the common good of the city of St. Louis by living the gospel to transform the idolatry of the city. Migrant ministry leaders multiplying whole life disciple making in beautiful community are redeeming the idols of parochial, prideful, and prejudicial attitudes. Migrant leaders are modeling humility in suffering for the American church to see the glory of the beatitudes lived as a city of ambassadors from all families of the earth. This study is a call to learn in community from the diaspora to establish apostolic church plants with five core networks and seek shalom and flourishing for the common good of the city of St. Louis."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"related_url_tesim":["https://www.covenantlibrary.org/etd/2024/Wos_Bradley_DMin_2024.pdf"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-default-approving","admin_set/default-default-depositing","admin_set/default-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Default Admin Set"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["library@covenantseminary.edu"],"_version_":1829688611523526656,"timestamp":"2025-04-17T21:57:15.830Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-04-17T21:45:35Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-04-17T21:45:37Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"e7e81373-60c8-4d82-a5a1-ff8a1b8f59d7","accessControl_ssim":["50545265-5e08-45a8-9849-9cc27009e3b1"],"depositor_ssim":["library@covenantseminary.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["library@covenantseminary.edu"],"title_tesim":["Reformational theology of ministry : introducing a new perspective on the missiological context of the secular west"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-04-17T21:45:34Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-04-17T21:45:34Z","isPartOf_ssim":["admin_set/default"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["05ec912c-1cc4-477c-98b1-38328a0b7465"],"hasLease_ssim":["3ec48752-13e6-42ec-9c2b-fbc33a9096d1"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Master of Arts in Biblical \u0026 Theological Studies"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["2024"],"resource_type_tesim":["Thesis"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Wijngaarden, Andreas van"],"subject_tesim":["Secularism","Christianity and culture","Western countries","Missions--Theory","Reformed Church--Doctrines"],"abstract_tesim":[" This thesis is about how a reformational theology of ministry influences missiology in the secular West. It is written because in a time where the Church in the West is in decline, it seems most necessary to deepen the understanding with regards to theological challenges that come with the missiological context of the secular West. The methodology is based upon descriptive research, which was guided by a main research question. The answering of the main question was done through answering four subquestions, and those four answers were key to most of the main content in the thesis. The first chapter starts with an introduction that describes the methodology, which is followed by a review of literature. Chapter two is about the characterization of a reformational theology of ministry, which is presented with the three principles of Gospel, Culture, and Movement. Chapter three then deals with the characterization of the secular West, in which it is first about the distinctiveness of the West and then about the concepts of postmodernity and post-Christian as essential insights into secularism. After that comes chapter four that has the focus on the characterization of the missional Church, which is described though an exploration of the missiological foundational elements of discipleship and faithful presence. The fifth chapter starts with summarizing the findings, followed by describing the characterization of the missional Church in the secular West, which is done by elaboration on six basic elements. These six basic elements are: Christian high theory, post-Christendom evangelistic dynamic, category defying social vision, counter-catechesis for a digital age, faithful presence in public spheres, and grace to the point. This fifth chapter ends with the conclusion that he secular West needs a healthy missional Church, which implies a reformational theology of ministry that is fruitful through proper incorporation of the three principles of Gospel, Culture, and Movement. And part of that conclusion is also that in order for the (missional) Church to be healthy it needs to embrace discipleship and faithful presence at the core of its (missiological) teaching. It is a conclusion that can also be understood with the two foundational commissions in the Bible: Genesis 1:26 and Matthew 28:18-20. Obeying this complete calling for Christians, so taking proper care of the world as well as making disciples, can be seen as the Biblical answer to the main research question of how reformational theology of ministry influences missiology in the secular West."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"related_url_tesim":["https://www.covenantlibrary.org/etd/2024/van_Wijngaarden_Andreas_MABTS_2024.pdf"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-default-approving","admin_set/default-default-depositing","admin_set/default-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Default Admin Set"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["library@covenantseminary.edu"],"_version_":1829687879958265856,"timestamp":"2025-04-17T21:45:38.156Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-04-17T21:26:35Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-04-17T21:26:37Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"ee703ed9-c554-442c-8cf7-2c16a78d5163","accessControl_ssim":["484ab223-5550-422f-8eeb-41c030a48d9c"],"depositor_ssim":["library@covenantseminary.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["library@covenantseminary.edu"],"title_tesim":["Is biblical womanhood obsolete? : Exploring new ways to teach biblical womanhood"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-04-17T21:26:34Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-04-17T21:26:34Z","isPartOf_ssim":["admin_set/default"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["34b633dc-004d-41da-9219-cb9a358cf38d"],"hasLease_ssim":["1d902adb-9aa9-498d-a47d-897dd694dd80"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["2024"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. WML face significant challenges in discipling the next generation of women, including evolving views on sex, gender roles, and biblical womanhood. This study utilizes a qualitative design using semi-structured interviews with eleven WML from various Reformed denominations with a minimum of five years of experience. The interviews focus on gaining data with four research questions: 1. What models do WML in the church currently use to teach women about biblical womanhood? 2. What challenges do WML encounter when they teach biblical womanhood to younger women? 3. What changes to their teaching on biblical womanhood have WML already undertaken to disciple the next generation of women? 4. What resources for teaching biblical womanhood do WML in the church say they will need to disciple women in the future? The literature review presents three areas key to understanding biblical womanhood: a concise biblical theology of womanhood, Biblical WomanhoodTM resources, and critiques of these resources. This study concludes that the teaching of biblical womanhood should include elements of creation design, biblical theology, gender eschatology, and a theology of the female body. Special attention should be given to the topics of identity, feminism, and transgenderism. Furthermore, WML expressed the necessity of providing an integrated, whole-person model of discipleship to younger women. Related to these three components, this study finds that WML face three major challenges when they teach biblical womanhood: difficulties in connecting with younger women, negative connotations of biblical womanhood, and experiential objections to it. Away from their families and centers of spiritual formation, young adults face tremendous ethical pressures from their peers and often find themselves without the necessary tools to navigate those challenges. This study utilized a qualitative design using semi-structured interviews with eight young adults who not only navigated those challenges, but also encouraged their peers toward a more biblical worldview resulting in ethical behavioral change. The interview analysis concluded that their experience of spiritual formation in their teenage years was a significant component for them upholding biblical sexual ethics in college and remaining in church later. The literature review focused on three key areas to understand the biblical sexual ethic and its subsequent development in adolescents: Modern commentary and exegesis of 1 Corinthians 6:12-20, The Greco-Roman context and ancient sexual ethic, and systems theory and its implications for parenting. This study found that adolescents described social pressure in four areas: humor, experimentation, overt challenge, and transactional behavior. Because of these challenges this study concluded that there are three necessary components to sustain healthy spiritual formation in adolescents for them to uphold biblical ethics: courageous clarity, heart-centered intentionality, and calm adaptability. This research addresses a gap between the care clinicians and ministers offer to veterans and the religious need that some combat veterans have. Given the presence of combat veterans within the church, how do ministers of the Word fill this gap with biblically-based pastoral care? Addressing this question utilized a qualitative design with semi-structured interviews and seven Christian veterans from the Vietnam War, the Gulf War and the War on Terrorism. Research questions guiding the interviews were (1) How did Christian veterans experience God during combat? (2) How did combat shape the faith of Christian veterans upon their return home? (3) How have pastors helped Christian veterans engage God? Three areas of literature were explored: spiritual and moral injury, the challenges of providing pastoral care within this context and a survey of Lamentations 3. Findings revealed that the care which ministers of the Word provided to Christian combat veterans was individualized and well received. However, the religious care specific to the effects of combat was primarily provided by combat veterans to one another resulting in three primary findings. First, the binary gap between the church and the clinic was expanded to include veteran organizations creating a triangular network of care. Second, feelings of spiritual distress were surpassed by the presence and protection of God during and after combat. Third, the ministry of these combat veterans to other veterans resembled the spiritual progression of the speaker in Lamentations 3 and the willingness to explore the need for confession and forgiveness with other combat veterans in ways that therapists or ministers typically cannot. The significance of these findings reveals a connection between the role of the speaker in Lamentations 3 and combat veterans who have suffered spiritual distress and yet experienced God’s hope. These veterans are the ones who engage their community of veterans as shepherds and invite them to engage God through confession. The task for the minister of the Word is to recognize the uniqueness of this ministry and equip its churches and veterans with scriptural encouragement and tangible support to these shepherds."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"related_url_tesim":["https://www.covenantlibrary.org/etd/2024/George_Seth_DMin_2024.pdf"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-default-approving","admin_set/default-default-depositing","admin_set/default-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Default Admin Set"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["library@covenantseminary.edu"],"_version_":1829571132964995072,"timestamp":"2025-04-16T14:49:59.547Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-04-16T14:44:33Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-04-16T14:44:35Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"9bc041ba-e2d3-4874-9a19-965b87c8983b","accessControl_ssim":["a7f6eabd-1795-4fa2-b74a-4d4463f8880b"],"depositor_ssim":["library@covenantseminary.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["library@covenantseminary.edu"],"title_tesim":["Mark as Peter's testimony : the narrator and the witnesses in the Gospel of Mark"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-04-16T14:44:32Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-04-16T14:44:32Z","isPartOf_ssim":["admin_set/default"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["e1371e2c-ac1b-4d6d-a107-66adddaef496"],"hasLease_ssim":["b291e7be-747a-4fbd-8e19-2b8dbc1ccbb1"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Master of Theology"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["2024"],"resource_type_tesim":["Thesis"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Bychkov, Oleksandr"],"subject_tesim":["Bible. Mark","Peter, the Apostle, Saint"],"abstract_tesim":[" Traditionally the close connection between the origin of the Gospel of Mark and St. Peter was recognized in the Christian church, primarily due to Papias’ witness. In the first half of the 20th century, this view was challenged and almost rejected due to the developments of so-called form criticism. Recently, several scholars argued for the validity of Papias’ tradition and the importance of eyewitnesses’ testimony, specifically Peter’s, for the Gospel’s origin. Thus, Richard Bauckham’s recent Jesus and the Eyewitnesses produced an intensive discussion among scholars. Some asked the valid question: does the Gospel itself support the claim of its possible origin from Peter’s (and others’) eyewitness testimony? This thesis seeks to answer this question and look for Mark’s Gospel internal evidence, which may imply its connection to Peter. The methodology utilized is provided by narrative criticism. The main topic of the research is the exploration of the relationship between Mark’s narrator and Peter as his possible key witness. Three features of Mark’s narrative, namely the narrator’s ability, point of view, and focalization, are put at the center of the investigation. Exploring these features allows drawing conclusions regarding the relationship between the narrator, Peter, and other disciples, and the implied reader in the spheres of knowledge, perception, psychology, and ideology. The study of the narrator’s ability revealed that it is possible to see the narrator as one with limited knowledge and dependent on the disciples in the sphere of knowledge. As the disciples had privileged access to Jesus, they were able to know him deeply. Jesus himself had exceptional knowledge abilities and openly revealed this knowledge in front of his disciples. It is argued that the disciples can serve as a medium between Jesus and the narrator and transfer Jesus’ knowledge to the latter. The study of point of view demonstrated the ongoing ideological conflict between Jesus and the disciples. This conflict affected the relationship between Jesus and the disciples and was revealed in the difference between Jesus’ and the disciples’ understanding and perceiving things. The study of focalization showed that the narrator constantly emphasizes the disciples’ perception, and both the narrator and the implied reader share their perception to a great extent. However, they are invited to learn Jesus’ perception. The conflict between the disciples and Jesus, if not resolved, would prevent them from right interpretation of the Gospel events, which is important for witnessing. It was shown that the conflict was resolved at the final point of Peter’s presence in the Gospel (14:72). At this moment, he learned to see the Gospel story in Jesus’ way. Passages 1:29–39 and 14:72 make the Gospel’s inclusio. This structure invites the implied reader to enter the Gospel story alongside Peter and then revisit it with him again after his vision is healed. Peter’s level of awareness, the emphasis on his perception, his role in the disciples’ conflict with Jesus, and its resolution make him an excellent candidate not only for Mark’s narrator’s key witness but that of Mark himself. Moreover, due to his experience in 14:72, the Gospel may be seen as Peter’s confession and testimony."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"related_url_tesim":["https://www.covenantlibrary.org/etd/2024/Bychkov_Oleksandr_ThM_2024.pdf"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-default-approving","admin_set/default-default-depositing","admin_set/default-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Default Admin Set"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["library@covenantseminary.edu"],"_version_":1829570793863905280,"timestamp":"2025-04-16T14:44:36.155Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-04-16T02:38:49Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-04-16T02:38:51Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"ff139d1c-2ec6-4f25-9577-3c89446f3065","accessControl_ssim":["59592884-7840-423c-aef1-5840a683bf61"],"depositor_ssim":["library@covenantseminary.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["library@covenantseminary.edu"],"title_tesim":["Contours of leadership : from the life and ministry of John R. W. Stott. This study sought insight, wisdom, and best practices from Stott’s faithful life and ministry. The research used the basic qualitative case study method. Seven individuals who served with Stott at various points throughout his over sixty years of ministry leadership were interviewed. The study reviewed three distinct areas of relevant literature: (1) a biblical framework for ministry leadership through the lens of the Apostle Paul in 1 \u0026 2 Timothy and Titus, (2) succession planning from long-term pastorates, and (3) core ministry practices of leader development in churches. The study revealed that Stott's leadership was characterized by a robust commitment to biblical truth, a remarkable focus on long-term leadership development, and an intuitive approach to succession planning. Participants highlighted Stott's personal humility, incisive mind, and discipline. His leadership disposition of “gentle seriousness” cultivated healthy institutions, mission-oriented teams, and the development of resilient leaders. The study found three key themes from the tenure of Stott: (1) a posture of “gentle seriousness,” (2) a life of discipline and delight, and (3) a long view of leadership development. The findings underscore the significance of Stott’s approach, particularly in addressing the challenges of resiliency and leader development in today’s ministry context."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"related_url_tesim":["https://www.covenantlibrary.org/etd/2024/Bailey_Anthony_Thomas_Jr_DMin_2024.pdf"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-default-approving","admin_set/default-default-depositing","admin_set/default-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Default Admin Set"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["library@covenantseminary.edu"],"_version_":1829525134446166016,"timestamp":"2025-04-16T02:38:51.941Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-04-16T02:28:52Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-04-16T02:28:54Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"150afd6c-15a9-492e-81e6-ce23f7948f40","accessControl_ssim":["47ade74d-b921-46cc-b575-dc81ca5a9440"],"depositor_ssim":["library@covenantseminary.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["library@covenantseminary.edu"],"title_tesim":["Better together : senior pastors' engagement with church planting networks"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-04-16T02:28:51Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-04-16T02:28:51Z","isPartOf_ssim":["admin_set/default"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["198ad347-74fe-4730-b4b3-8778bc403e50"],"hasLease_ssim":["8b6b0cf5-4b9d-40ab-ac42-568185131699"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["2024"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. However, little research has examined senior pastors' experiences within and aspirations for CPNs. This study explored how senior pastors engage with CPNs. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with six senior pastors in the Presbyterian Church in America who have been actively involved in the Southwest Church Planting Network for over a decade. Four research questions guided this research: (1) What benefits do senior pastors experience when they engage with church-planting networks? (2) What challenges do senior pastors face when they engage with church-planting networks? (3) How do senior pastors navigate the challenges they face when they engage with church-planting networks? (4) What are senior pastors’ hopes for engagement with church-planting networks? The literature review examined lessons from the Book of Acts for contemporary CPN development, and research on network dynamics and organizational hierarchies. The key benefits identified included camaraderie, compelling vision, and access to funding. Primary challenges included diminished relational connections over time, loss of aspirational leadership, and complacency. Pastors navigated challenges through singular loyalty to the CPN. Hopes for the future centered around prayer, compelling rationale for planting, unified philosophy, clear metrics, new models, sustainable funding, dedicated leadership, training and coaching. These findings provide valuable insights for CPN leaders seeking to enhance senior pastor involvement.
