Specifically, if they are better able to discern God's activity and will, will their preaching be more effective? Lay leaders undertook a two-year training program supervised by the author.  Five models were employed to guide the formation process.  In group sessions and practical experience lay leaders deepen their skill and self-awareness, increase awareness of God's call on them to partnership with clergy in faithful sustainable ministry within the church and community. As the project developed into this dissertation, testing was used to evaluate the impact on church members of the content, both concerning knowledge and also attitudes and behavioral intentions. Pretests and posttests were used to establish each attendee's knowledge, attitudes and behavior and the amount of gain after each of six teaching sessions. Following the method of practical theology, i.e., a praxis-theory-praxis approach, the author began with the stories of torture survivors and considered these interviews in relation to different elements of the U.S. Hispanic community.
