The thesis examines the process of understanding a church's past, honestly facing problems, and developing a rite of passage which allows healing and reconciliation to happen. The concepts in Family Systems Theory with emphasis on differentiation became the instrument in the change process. Chapter 5 describes the preaching of the sermon series. Chapter 6 describes the final retreat. Chapter 7 provides conclusions, final evaluations and future hopes. The term disability relates to individuals who are unable to function to their fullest capacity due to various physical, emotional, social, or intellectual problems.  This study explores and documents the experiences of families with children in the New Jersey metropolitan area, their involvement with clery and religious congregations, and, more specifically, the experience of parents with a child newly identified with a disability and the role in which clergy and congregations play in that process. The elements of this report include a discussion of current literature and resources on the subject; a theological review of the history of disabilities within the Christian faith and the socioeconomic environment; a description of the research survey tool utilized to gather specific evidence related to the topic; a discussioon of the results gained through the application of this research tool; and an analysis of implications that exist within the current framework of the Christian church. This thesis-project proposes that novice pastors can become better communicators through mentoring relationships with seasoned preachers. When these relationships are not possible in a pastor's ministry setting, then distance sermon coaching--using telephone, e-mail, cassette tapes--can help pastors continue to improve homiletical skills. The project provides the theological and theoretical background for such an approach. Espousing a 'Theology of Helpful Trauma,' the author asserts that crises are developmentally significant opportunities for maturation and encourages clergy and other leaders to facilitate development in crisis  rather than work to control it.  Four 'touchstones' are provided which empower leaders within such situation to encourage development. It is a collection of interviews and articles which document the current movement of community wide unity among the evangelical churches in the city of Modesto, California.  The study begins with the Billy Graham Crusade in 1948 and includes over fourteen separate events or ministries through 1998.  Those studied are both responses to the hand of God as well as proactive movements by community leaders to work together.  The work concludes with three basic concepts which the author believes are transferrable to other communities who are interested in generating a similar community wide church unity. Favoring the insiders' perspective, it explores needs assessment and participant observation as tools for initial (outsider) pastoral listening in a Mexicano Catholic immigrant faith community in southern Colorado. Through a critical review of leadership research and a word study, it relates stakeholder findings to Joseph Rost's relational concept of leadership, as well as to Ronald Heifetz's leadership task of promoting adaptive change.
