It is a review of sermons over a twenty-year period while the congregation was involved in a transition from a white ethnic German congregation to a church with 82 percent African American membership. Through comparing life-issues identified by church members with those identified by members of the community who called the police for help, the author exposed issues the preacher would be unaware of unless his or her contact goes beyond the church.
