There is also a great need for pastoral leadership; this need seems to be increasing. This author, in an attempt to gain a better understanding of what is needed to lead the church within the presbytery he serves, set out to study the pastoral and leadership styles of five colleagues within the presbytery. This author solicited from each participant the biblical role models, the literature, and the people that have most greatly influenced them as a pastoral leader. The researcher investigated how other Protestant denominations perform this task, what the Bible says about the subject, and ways the LSLS can be improved. A qualitative approach was taken that used case study and grounded theory methods. The case study approach was followed through interviews and site visits. The author used a qualitative research method for gathering data. Personal interviews from pastors faced with this dilemma, plus questionnaires and interviews from his family, churches and communities, where he pastored with his disabled wife, played a significant role in his research. As well, an archival research into the effects and challenges facing caregivers and their families added to his insights. As the fields of Oral Interpretation and Performance Studies show, the Bible is best heard when performed. Preachers who internalize texts speak from a personal encounter with the Word. The thesis studied how a weekly scripture by heart practice serves to focus the preacher's attention, engage the imagination, inform exegesis, and guide sermon preparation.
