These two basic endeavors are what disciples of Jesus should be doing with their lives. We have been transformed, redeemed through the work of Christ on the cross; it begins here with God’s grace and salvation, imparted by the Holy Spirit. Then it must continue by daily taking up our cross and dying to self, or transforming; the life-long process of sanctification. Chapter 1 introduces the study and includes a thesis statement and an examination of the biographical factors, which influenced Scarborough’s life. This chapter includes Scarborough’s family background, call to ministry, education, pastoral experience, summary, and timeline.  Chapter 2 examines Scarborough’s influence as general director of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Seventy-Five Million Campaign, which was a program intended to raise 75 million dollars over a five-year period from 1919-1924, to help finance Baptist efforts in missions, education, and other benevolent work. This chapter presents his influence in development and implementation of a strategy to execute the campaign. Chapter 3 examines Scarborough’s influence as a committee member of the Future Program Commission, which recommended adopting the Southern Baptist Convention’s Cooperative Program [CP] in 1925. This chapter presents his influence related to the theological convictions he maintained in the area of cooperation. Chapter 4 examines Scarborough’s influence as a member of the Baptist Faith \u0026 Message committee, which framed the first Southern Baptist convention-wide confession, entitled the Baptist Faith \u0026 Message in 1925. Prior to the 1925 confession, they used the New Hampshire Confession of Faith (1833)  and the Abstract of Principles (1858).  Chapter 5 provides a conclusion for the entire dissertation and centers on one of the most important concepts espoused by Scarborough during his lifetime. The concept of cooperation was redefined by Scarborough in a way for Southern Baptists that still marks a distinguishing feature of the denomination today. Although he conducted the field work during COVID-19 lockdowns and disruption that goal was substantially achieved. Biblical study, theological reflection, and sociological insights formed the foundation for the author’s development of the training course. That research shaped a congregational survey regarding attitudes to personal evangelism, which in turn fed into an expert sample of ministry leaders and evangelistic trainers. In the light of these inputs the author wrote and piloted a four-week evangelistic training course. Course participant responses enabled the author to make a preliminary assessment regarding the effectiveness of the training course. The author then suggested a trajectory along which he could develop the course, and supplement it with additional support and resources. He also mapped out a ministry plan for the construction of an evangelistic ecosystem within a local church, incorporating an adapted version of the piloted course alongside additional groups and further input. Acts","Missions--Theory"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This dissertation suggests that Acts 17:16-34 is intended by Luke as a paradigm for evangelism among the biblically illiterate and seeks to identify the methodology that is set forward as a paradigm. In the first section, two arguments against seeing Acts 17:16-34 as a Lucan paradigm are examined. Chapter two examines the arguments of those who claim that this speech is in no way an example of Pauline preaching but is rather the work of Luke or some later redactor. It is argued that there are no ultimately persuasive reasons to accept this view of the reliability of the speech. Chapter three presents the ideas of those who believe that the speech was a failure on the basis of issues such as the small number of converts and insights from the early Chapters of 1 Corinthians. These commentators believe Paul later repented of the approach he took at Athens. Again the essay examines these arguments and ultimately concludes that there is no reason to see the speech as anything other than successful. Section two asks what example Acts 17:16-34 sets for readers. Commentators have differed over their understanding of what Paul is doing here. Some argue that the speech represents a work of assimilation with Greek philosophy, others a critique of Greek idolatry and other groups some combination of the two. This essay will argue for a contextualised critique methodology. The purpose was to equip leaders of Life Groups so that they would become effective disciple makers. Small group leaders were trained to influence their members to invite unbelievers to attend. The project utilized cell group gatherings to develop the relationship members have with God by having a regular quiet time. Newcomers experienced supernatural love and ministry through group life. The small groups, as well as the whole church, gained an outward focus of inviting unbelievers to their gatherings each week. Members grew spiritually as they learned to hear from God by daily Bible reading. The project was conducted using a case study group of nine individuals. The team was tasked to identify those who needed to hear the gospel and find opportunities to share with them on a regular basis. Upon processing the data, three skills were identified toward having a lifestyle of evangelism: (1) identifying your oikos, (2) clearly articulating your salvation testimony, and (3) engaging in evangelistic conversation. This strategy seeks to facilitate the planting of responsible and reproducing churches that can thrive under local leadership using local resources for generations to come. There are four hypotheses that guide this study: Balance in evangelism and discipleship in unreached communities must be maintained. Local leaders must be preserved for local churches without depending on external support. Cross-cultural missionaries must prepare local leaders to do the majority of the public teaching in the churches that are planted. Cross-cultural missionaries must train local leaders to be responsible for the leadership of the churches that are planted. These hypotheses were evaluated in the bibliographic and biblical research. The SEARA mission was researched to determine if these hypotheses are currently evident in the mission’s methodologies. God loves people and calls Christians to participate in His redemptive mission. God calls Christians to bless them and make them a blessing to others. The church is believers who are gathered to bring nonbelievers to God. The nature of the church is missional. A missional church engages every believer to participate in the Great Commission. The incarnation of God demonstrates God’s love and reveals the model of mission and evangelism. The incarnational approach is entering other people’s worlds as Jesus Christ entered the world to identify with them without compromising biblical convictions, values, or standards. This project introduced a new evangelism approach, the “Happiness Groups” (HG) strategy. HG is a love-based incarnational group evangelism strategy developed to send Christians to their community to demonstrate God’s love to nonbelievers by loving them in their real-life settings and telling the gospel in their understandings. HG is the central ministry of the church to align the rest of the ministries toward fulfilling the Great Commission. It also is an on-the-job training platform that trains ordinary Christians to become effective gospel messengers to accomplish the extraordinary for God. Finally, this project adapted HG to transform the attractional evangelism strategy of a Chinese immigrant church in Southern California to an incarnational, missional strategy. This project conducted three rounds of HG (two rounds in person and one virtually). The data were analyzed, discussed, and evaluated. The result indicated that the HG strategy is effective in the North American Chinese church cultural context both in person and in virtual settings. The conversion, baptism, and coworker’s involvement were all improved significantly. The transformation successfully solved the low-effectiveness and low-involvement problems of the church. Evidence of this correlation is shown by focusing on the faithful interpretation and application of the Trustworthy Sayings of the Pastoral Epistles as modeled by the preaching of Herschel Hobbs.Beginning with a consideration of God’s plan for preaching to be of first importance within the practices of a local church, this project establishes the importance of biblically-sound doctrine for church health and revitalization. Chapter 2 begins the project’s examination of the Trustworthy Sayings, with each chapter offering an analysis of a related sermon preached by Herschel Hobbs during his pastorate at First Baptist Church, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.The Trustworthy Sayings do not appear in the same order as they are in the Pastoral Epistles, but rather are placed so that one saying builds upon the next. First Timothy 1:15 (Chapter 2) addresses soteriological views in Southern Baptist history. First Timothy 4:8-10 (Chapter 3) considers the role of doctrinal preaching in discipling church members who will be devoted followers of Jesus Christ. Chapter 4 considers Titus 3:4-8 and how believers who are devoted to God will also be devoted to good works which honor God. Second Timothy 2:11-13 (Chapter 5) speaks of God’s faithfulness and the hope which His faithfulness provides for the local church. First Timothy 3:1 (Chapter 6) addresses the character of the called and considers the qualifications of a senior pastor.The project concludes (Chapter 7) with a charge to the pulpit and the local church which, if implemented, will help protect the local church from suffering from doctrinal drift.
