Three examples of successful adoptions were studied in a multiple case study design. Results describe optimal conditions and best practices, as well as a framework based on John Kotter's Eight Steps for Leading Change. The study looked at three models being used by United Methodist churches for multi-site ministry: purchase and build, church merger, and existing space/rental. The study used semi-structured interviews with focus groups from three multi-site United Methodist churches. The study focused on the decision making process in becoming a multi-site church, the transitioning process from a single to multi-site church, the experience of being a multi-site church, and the relationship to the United Methodist hierarchy. The study found that most churches do not start with the intention of becoming a multi-site church, but are influenced by various factors, including some type of crisis, a strong evangelistic emphasis, or a powerful vision. Regarding the transition process, the study found that a sufficient amount of time and careful planning were necessary for success. Key factors were a realistic understanding of the difficulties, the importance of leadership, communication within the congregation and outside, effective advertising, and the use of missioners. The study found that there were struggles as well as benefits in the practice of multi-site ministry. Leadership and leadership development were important factors. Benefits included reaching different demographics and providing variety in worship and ministry styles. Struggles included relating to other churches of the same denomination, dealing with finances, and maintaining a sense of unity. Regarding the relationship with the hierarchy, the study found little information. Most churches experienced minimal help or contact with church officials except in cases of conflict with other churches. There was often misunderstanding with the multi-site model. Greater participation by district superintendents and bishops could be expected with the merger model. The study concluded that multi-site ministry is one effective way that United Methodist churches can expand their ministry and outreach."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e57e5218-1d34-47f5-b1a5-b84efbc9e61f"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131326267523072,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:45:43.172Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:46:41Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:00:23Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"69b0eb31-b6b7-486d-8e12-c9df41438414","accessControl_ssim":["1d3729b5-70bc-4077-9b69-e39a5fa347d0"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Upon this rock: identifying the ways members of St. Andrew and St. John United Methodist churches experienced learning through merger"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:46:40Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:13:34Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["68759998-c810-464d-87f5-f3fd261dc976"],"hasLease_ssim":["d4f39bec-04d2-4a12-bec5-f0cc2496d183"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["D Cameron Murchison"],"year_tesim":["2008"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["John E Stephens"],"keyword_tesim":["Local church mergers"],"publisher_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Congregations","St John United Methodist Church (Columbus, Ga)","Methodist Church","St Andrew United Methodist Church (Columbus, Ga)","Group identity","St Peter United Methodist Church (Columbus, Ga)"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project examines the merger between St. Andrew and St. John United Methodist Churches in 2004 which formed a new congregation called St. Peter United Methodist Church. This feedback was incorporated into the thesis."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["McCormick Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["7eda0323-a6d9-4fe2-807a-22620dd389a5"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791128148965851136,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:55:13.061Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T06:00:43Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:27:18Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"f9207782-f4e9-4b08-8d6d-48932ace78ad","accessControl_ssim":["68a71f12-ef45-4d3f-9b1f-b53b140258e3"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Many members, one body: a process for moving toward merger"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T06:00:42Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T05:14:36Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["81272eb8-0ea8-48f4-9ca4-1cf60c72644a"],"hasLease_ssim":["f2b0250a-ad8b-40d8-a341-b6a404766ed8"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["United Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Mary Olson","Hae Jong Kim"],"year_tesim":["1997"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Dana Glenn Hakes"],"keyword_tesim":["Local church mergers"],"publisher_tesim":["United Theological Seminary (OH)"],"subject_tesim":["Congregations","Methodist Church","Church renewal--Methodist Church","United Methodist Church"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project facilitates a process by which two long-established United Methodist congregations in Bremen, Ohio, unite to pursue common goals, restoring vision, purpose, and hope. Two churches that split fifteen years ago because of a dispute about leadership decided to merge again. This project uses the reconciliation of these two churches as a model for other congregations that may consider merging. Three major criteria--philosophical, relational, and physical--are crucial factors for a successful merger. Hindrances to unity stemmed from spiritual conflicts and a process requiring unanimous decisions. Conflicts involved leadership issues, power plays by individuals, personal preferences about worship, and conflict over Christian life teaching that led to tabling the merger and renewed division. The project outlines seven steps toward a successful merger that formed a new church, based on the experience of these churches and research in the literature."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["8322f611-a593-413a-8bcd-0011fba52dc7"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130881226702848,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:38:38.748Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T04:10:29Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:36:37Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"fd34bfb8-5a02-41f2-b0ee-665a8836fc5b","accessControl_ssim":["1a77100c-6d2e-4527-be6d-39e8b3c113e5"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Membership assimilation in a merged black Pentecostal church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T04:10:28Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T05:22:26Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["0b9c2e32-bb2e-48ab-ae10-e9302e99cbc8"],"hasLease_ssim":["d9f8a1b2-6ef5-4b0b-b08b-e0d00e1a3b1c"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Boston University"],"advisor_tesim":["John W Ward"],"year_tesim":["1995"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["G Wesley Hardy"],"keyword_tesim":["Local church mergers"],"publisher_tesim":["Boston University School of Theology"],"subject_tesim":["Pentecostal churches","Assimilation (Sociology)","Church membership"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This thesis analyzes the problems of membership assimilation as the result of merging two black Pentecostal churches. Content analysis was used to evaluate data gathered from interviews of six original members and twelve new members who joined after the merger. Problems revolving around fears of anonymity and loss of intimacy affected the assimilation of original members. The making of new friends was important in deciding whether or not original members or new members remained active. Confrontations in newly formed groups inhibited the assimilation process. Lay involvement in the ministry of pastoral care was determined to be needed to improve assimilation."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Boston University"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["2d58bd09-76d0-4970-b257-d55229e0173e"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799718593028423680,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:36:38.930Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":17,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"D.Min.
