Seeking to develop a structure that is consistent with shared theological and ethical beliefs in equality, justice, mutuality, diversity, and community, the group members aim to engage in the process, make decisions by consensus, accept diversity, accept rersponsibility for group participation and process, and to become more self-revealing. The power equity group model works for small groups whose members have interest in and energy for process and are capable of personal insight. The instrument is to honor the diversity that will be present in any group of pastoral counseling students in such a way that the students are able to explore their own personal perspectives on theology and psychology without experiencing a need to conform to the perspectives held by others.  The students then will be helped to form an understanding of the integration of their psychological and theological perspectives. The intent of this project is to ascertain how well clergy measure up to the American Association of Pastoral Counselors' standards for counseling, and to lift up the positive and negative aspects of clergy counseling as currently practiced.  The primary elements of this project include a questionnaire completed by an interfaith sampling of congregational clergy in a major metropolitan area, a biblical/historical glimpse of counseling, hope theology, and a family systems model. A significant relationship among these three elements, previously overlooked in the psychological and pastoral care literature, was hypothesized.  The psychoanalytic concept of transference and the theological use of metaphor were used to examine these connections.  Taking a qualitative research approach, the author interviewed four female pastoral counselors. Data was analyzed using six themes of sibling/work relationships which emerged in the literature review. Participants were pastors, therapists, and pastoral counselors who give spiritual guidance within the Protestant tradition.  James Fowler's faith development interview provided a pre-retreat picture of the participants.  The leader used a regimen of spiritual exercises designed to evoke a powerful sense of God's presence for them.  The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, Pearson's Heroic Myth Index, and self-projective artwork gave participants ways to engage their personal unconscious material. Research indicated significant experience of positive collegial relationships with male and female peers and supervisors.  Women most active in the Association indicated the greatest positive experience and the highest level of concern about collegial issues. Research gathered demographic data and identified historical dynamics about the entrance and increasing participation of women in AAPC.
