The participants in the research were elders in congregations of the Reformed Church in America where the pastor had served at least ten years.  A questionnaire allowed those elders to rank eight areas of ministry and to give an indication of the health of the pastoral relationship. The data was collected from sixty randomly selected ruling elders who answered the questionnaire.  It was discovered that there is a higher correlation between specific academic training and good performance than between life experiences and good performances.  One must not conclude that good academic training will cause outstanding elder performance. There may be a third factor influencing both.  A supplement to the study itself provides a theological framework for the raw data.
