The five-week program was taught to over twenty leaders using prescribed materials. Pre- and post-program questionnaires were administered to assess spiritual health. The questionnaires measured the participant's awareness of the Holy Spirit's presence, time given to spiritual development, value attributed to congregational worship, involvement in lay-supported ministry, and the value they attributed to Christian fellowship. Responses showed some improvement in each of these areas. Eleven participants met for twelve weeks.  A pre- and post-test questionnaire measured the effectiveness of their ability to minister healing.  Evaluation of the data showed the participants learned the healing paradigm. The author helps prepare course material, prepares several instructors to teach the course, teaches two semesters of the program and evaluates it afterwards. Through the use of personal interviews, conversations, and questionnaires, he discovers that the participants feel they have grown in their qualifications for ministry.  They acknowledge that the program helps them to pray more sincerely, to deal constructively with conflict and to develop leadership skills for ministry. Authors who had written on this subject in the past five years were consulted. The thesis also examined definitions and directions through a questionnaire mailed out to five hundred protestant churches representing three Lutheran 'evangelical' denominations.  The thesis was tested through the efforts of a lay ministry team.  This group arrived at a definition of lay ministry and implemented their ministry through several case studies which are presented. The book outlines how church congregations can work with seniors to help meet their physical, psychological, social, and spiritual needs.  An organizational model for a senior adults' group is included as well as surveys that can be used in communities and facilities for seniors. After a review of biblical, theological, and psychological literature, the lay board members of six selected churches were surveyed for demographic information, opinions regarding volunteerism, and theological beliefs. The pastors of those six churches were personally interviewed regarding the same items. For these gifts to be effectively utilized in service, the church itself must be structured for employing the spiritual gifts of members.  I drafted a theology of spiritual gifts and a philosophy of ministry regarding spiritual gifts.  I guided the church leadership in drafting an official church position regarding the operation of spiritual gifts within the congregation.  In addition, job descriptions were drafted.  A series of sermons was designed to assist the church in understanding spiritual gifts and discovering gifts each possessed.  A Houts modified questionnaire, a Christian experience questionnaire, and another gift discovery form were
