Seven persons participated in the nine-week study, the first two being didactic sessions that covered worship and preaching.  They then participated in a Lenten Bible study-seminar of the New Common Lectionary texts. From the study, the author gained insights for the sermon. Utilizing a control group, the author conducted a pre-test and post-test. Commentaries for each Sunday's set of readings for the three-year cycle were written.  Three periods of in-ministry testing of a congregation demonstrated  that the majority of congregational respondents benefitted from emphasis on the Old Testament message, and that lay and peer advisory group respondents grew in their appreciation of that message and its integration in their faith-life. It begins with a bibliographic essay of the literature in the last century.  It moves to a focus on how the Bible is used in developing a theology of other religions.  It then presents a Bible study, written for college students, which addresses the theological issues in understandable language.  The Bible study was fieldpre-tested with twenty Students. The researcher designed a curriculum on the canonical approach advocated by Brevard Childs.  Questionnaires tested the clergy and laity before and after the intervention of the approach in preaching. Results indicated that out of 20 questions for the clergy no significant changes took place.  With regard to 10 questions for the laity two showed a significant change. The hypothesis upon which the project was based is that there is a direct relationship between the adequacy of one's pre-hermeneutic and the adequacy of one's interpretation of biblical texts.  A course of study of the Gospel of Matthew was prepared and taught to members of a local congregation to test the validity of the hypothesis. Testing procedures were designed and administered to measure the results of the course and the degree of biblical literacy achieved. The dynamics of small group Bible study are utilized to provide opportunities for spiritual growth in the lives of the participants.  The curriculum format utilizes both direct and indirect teaching methods and employs a variety of pedagogical tools including biblical exegesis, philosophical analysis, theological insights and discussion techniques to accomplish this.
