As a result the writer developed and taught the course, 'Towards an evangelical understanding of Roman Catholicism,' covering post-Vatican II theological developments using concepts of adult education. Although evangelicals have serious doctrinal differences with the Catholic Church, this does not rule out cooperation. The course seemed to slightly increase knowledge of the Catholic Church and confidence in sharing the gospel with Catholics. This study provides theories of interpretation and knowing for spiritual directors.  The unconscious is variously understood to impede knowledge, to provide the building blocks for all knowledge and to constitute the essential prerequisites for religious knowledge and experience.  Models are used to organize diverse theories. Catholic theological structure, defined by the magesterium, is used because of theological conviction and the opinion that religious knowledge requires interface between personal structures with superordinate structures. It seemed valuable to design a study which would express the Church's understanding of diocesan priesthood in the teaching of Vatican Council II, and to examine the way in which this was addressed in the policies of St John's field education department and in some representative sites.
