Preaching a lament opens listeners to deal with the real issues that burden them.  This thesis proposes specifically the reclaiming of the psalms of lament in preaching following the homiletic design for celebration of Frank Thomas.  With this integration the preacher is both the leader of lament and celebrant of God's presence. The author examined the ways in which engagement with Zen can enrich Christian preaching by offering contemplative tools that form preachers not merely as transmitters of sacred information but as embodied witnesses of grace who have experienced the Good News that they preach. This study employed qualitative research to examine the reflections of Christians who have assimilated Zen practice into their Christian lives. Wallace Hamilton an effective deductive preacher so that contemporary preachers may improve the effectiveness of their own preaching. This project also discloses the characteristics of Hamilton's preaching, which would be ineffective for the contemporary preacher. Fred Craddock's inductive preaching method informs my critique of Hamilton. Research for this project includes interviews with those who heard Hamilton preach, analysis of Hamilton's sermons, and feedback from those who listened to sermons by Hamilton and Craddock.
