The principal idea used was John Wesley's admonition to 'earn all you can, save all you can, and give all you can.' This method can be applied to finances and all aspects of discipleship. The author used a four-week Bible study to examine this holistic method of stewardship. Following from this is a corresponding dearth of pastoral leaders, women and men who lead others toward discipleship through intentional Christian formation, firmly grounded in the Wesleyan tradition.  The author researched formation of lay pastoral leadership through covenant discipleship group.  He found that the congregation was thoroughly acculturated.  It is a mirror image of the dominant culture. A group of fifteen volunteers participated in a six session project, covering the origins and historical context of the class meetings, and four key characteristics--journal writing, use of Scripture, accountability and discipline, and prayer and the sacraments. Present practice is not consistent with historical Christianity nor with Wesleyan Methodism.  To be actively involved in the healing of the broken body of Christ this part of their heritage must be understood and reclaimed. Meeting with a reflection group, representative of the congregation, Methodist eucharistic heritage, ecumenical and liturgical renewal, and local customs were studied. The church year provided the vehicle through which themes of the eucharist were celebrated.  Taped interviews with the congregation following each service helped assess progress.
