Shame is a deep social problem leading even more so to profound social, emotional and personality disorders. The purpose of this research is to bring attention to the plight of African American adolescent males and their problems with shame. Given partnerships between churches and communities seldom exist; Ivanhoe implemented a teaching/learning context in partnership with other institutions to equip youth to deal with social, economic and spiritual challenges threatening their well-being and productivity. A qualitative approach using participatory observation, surveys, journaling, and spiritual formation lessons and activities was utilized. The hypothesis states that spiritually empowered youth internalize God's love and develop spiritual discipline and self-control needed to transcend and transform racial, social, and economic constraints. The small group model includes both a didactic and a creative writing component. The context of this ministry model is a private school at Gravel Run Baptist Church in Dinwiddie, VA. Students were the same age, grade level, culture, and received similar courses of study. Student and parent interviews were also done to obtain deeper insight.
