The project director then organized the discovered material into a presentable curriculum for the workshop and self-directed study. It examines a theological basis derived from process thought, pastoral psychological dynamics and the nature of crisis.  Types and goals of crisis counseling are analyzed.  The project explicates five processes of crisis counseling in the light of Chinese culture: 1) the establishment of a meaningful therapeutic relationship; 2) experience and awareness; 3) reinforcement of positive thinking and behavior; 4) sincere sharing; and 5) action therapy. The event itself may exist only a few moments, but its impact and consequences can extend for weeks, or months, and sometimes years.  In short, when a disaster occurs, a crisis is produced which has immediate and long-term effects upon the total community.  The intent of this project is to provide a resource guide for volunteers who are selected by their church bodies or congregations and who are willing to become consultants or counselors at disaster sites. After establishing the theological base, three areas were researched: the principles of crisis intervention, related chaplaincies, and existing chaplaincies with emergency care units.  Attention is given to the skills needed, legal matters, the nature and needs of the volunteer rescue workers, and possible challenges and criticisms. Five illustrations of crisis ministry, including providing support to help the individuals mobilize their coping resources, share their emotional load, provide physical assistance in terms of money, skills and/or cognitive guidance are shared. Caplan and other researchers emphasize that a crisis is characteristically self-limiting and lasts from four to six weeks.  The paper illustrates that a goal-oriented sense of commitment develops in sharp contrast to normal modes of treatment.  Crisis management/intervention is not counseling; its goal is the resolution of the crisis and a return to normalcy. The paper deals with the nature of crisis, the dynamics of grief, and death as a grief crisis.  The appendices are: 1) two verbatims dealing with a dying patient and a grief sufferer; 2) four surveys; 3) a detailed instruction format for persons who are called upon to manage/intervene in crisis situations; 4) practical aspects of crisis intervention/management; and 5) general considerations on death and dying.
