The author developed and deployed a seminar for ascertaining whether an increased understanding of the security of the gospel (i.e., union with Christ) could help Christians engage their troublesome emotions and assist them in the dissolution of negative affect (guilt, fear, or shame). The study was conducted by exploring several popular resources on pastoral theology and examining their emphasis on (or lack of) union with Christ. Additionally, qualitative research was conducted with twelve pastors who serve in the Presbyterian Church in America.
