Ten (10) friendship dyads of the same gender were interviewed utilizing 13 open-ended questions. An additional 215 single adults also participated in a 25-question survey. Along with the literature search, a questionnaire was distributed to all congregations within the presbytery and six case studies were conducted.  The author also investigates the relevance of the Church Growth and Small Church Movements for the Australian Church.  The major external influences focus upon the process of secularization and the cyclical movement of the growth and decline of churches within Sydney associated with the predominance of the middle class.
