To address the problem a two year training program, drawing upon the spirituality of the Christian contemplative tradition, was developed. The course included training in listening skills, prayer, meditation and other spiritual disciplines, group spiritual direction, and reading and writing assignments. Criteria for inclusion in the study were that Ignatian spiritual directors: 1) be presently engaged in the practice of spiritual direction; 2) had personally experienced a Spiritual Exercise retreat; and 3) practiced the Ignatian method of spiritual direction. A semi-structured interview was conducted with each director. The data indicated that spiritual directors understood what resistance was but were less able to articulate how they handled resistance to change exhibited by directees.
