Thus while the Igbo naming ceremony makes one an Igbo, the rite of baptism makes one a Christian.  The author analyzed the Anglican rite of baptismal ritual as it is contained in The Book of Common Prayer in the light of Turner's theory of rituals.  He used missional theology as a lens to examine the rite of baptism in the Igbo context of eastern Nigeria. Mircea Eliade, Victor Turner and Paul Ricoeur provide the theoretical framework for congregational change, tested through direct observation, congergational focus groups, a survey, and interviews. Findings indicated that metanarratives are effective vehicles for conveying and shaping the church's values and identity, serving a corrective and evaluative function, renewing and healing.
