Project"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Tassey, Matthew"],"subject_tesim":["Catechetics--Lutheran Church","Virtues"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Too many of the Church’s youth do not have a solid framework for understanding the biblical/historical concept of virtue and so are “tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes” (Eph 4:14) of the world’s “virtue signaling,” “social justice,” and the like. Classical terms like virtue and vice, and with them excellence, integrity, character, courage, justice, wisdom, and self-control are often said but are heard as unrelated vocabulary words and so easily manipulated. What is needed is for youth to have a foundation of virtue as a whole in a biblical perspective so that they can begin to wisely build upon this concept intellectually, practically, and spiritually throughout their lives. \r\nReviewing virtue works past and present, this study explores the exegetical, historical, systematic, and practical resources for teaching virtue in order to create a tool for instilling virtue to the Church’s youth and all who will learn, especially for the Confirmation class at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Shawnee, Oklahoma. The effectiveness of this resource over seven weeks of Confirmation classes was then evaluated by reactions from the kids, catechists, and parents, along with triangulation measures from area churches not using this resource. People from both realms frequently align Christianity with a deontological system of ethics. However, such a system of duty ethics often leads to a self-righteous legalism both groups would oppose. The locus of scripture is not to teach believers to do, but rather to become and the doing will follow. The paper interacts with the teachings of Aristotle, Augustine and Aquinas to establish both an historical and theological basis for virtue ethics. The church departed her normal practice of virtue theory and replaced it with deontology. It is time for the church to recover the biblical system of virtue ethics. Deontology is not set aside, but used as a guide for assessing the virtues required. Believers must especially cultivate the virtues of faith, hope and love in order to recover the reputation of the Church as a holy and reliable institution that can point the world to the One True God. When congregants aspire to become virtuous Christians, then the church will be able to recover her identity as the holy institution of God in the eyes of the world. The examination of the lives of pastors, leaders, and lay leaders defined as servant leaders based on Patterson's doctoral work, helped in the development of an attribute-driven virtue-focused servant leadership development model. The project studied the effect that a Christian humility cultivation experience might have on leaders' understanding and awareness of the amount of prideful attitudes they exhibit, versus their understanding of humility and the amount of humble attitudes they exhibit. Qualitative feedback gained during the humility cultivation experience, along with self-assessment data, formed a solid basis for evaluating the project's effectiveness. In order to accomplish the goals of this project, the project director researched the topic of leadership and identified various skills of servant leadership. From the skills identified, the director identified two and researched them further: 'the character of a servant leader' and 'the vision of a servant leader.' The project consisted of a leadership workshop made up of five one-hour sessions given over a perios of Friday evening through Saturday morning. The first session was an introduction to servant leadership. In sessions two and three, about the character of a servant leader, the focus was on the skills of humility, values, and integrity. The intent of this project is to create an environment of transformation for the development of virtuous leaders at Crosspoint Church in Hemet, California.  This project, therefore, developed lectures on the creation ordinances of Genesis, the wisdom sayings of Proverbs, the beatitudes of Matthew's gospel, and the key vice and virtue lists of the New Testament.  The research design combined thirteen weeks of instruction, weekly sermonic reading, daily practice of the spiritual disciplines, and evaluation instruments.
