Since religion and culture directly overlap, interreligious conversation is a cross-cultural exposure of faith issues. The geographical focus of the dialogues centers in India, with aspects of the dominant Hindu religion intersecting with the small, minority Christian presence. While attention to the Mennonite denomination reflects the writer's Protestant connection, principles apply to any Christian engagement with other religions. One survey concluded that at any given time more than 30,000 Protestant churches in the United States are in serious conflict. This equates to about one church in twelve in serious conflict. At the same time, there is a growing body of knowledge in the field of family systems theory that can assist a person's managing of his/her life in a way that can influence these congregations toward a higher level of functioning. The purpose of this project was to discern the potential benefit to parish pastors involved in a limited experiential process using family systems theory as the basis for teaching and interpreting their family of origin issues for personal growth. The Preface to the paper provides an example of a highly anxious and low functioning church. It is a true story not unlike those of many churches in America today. It provides a point of reference for the first chapter which introduces a family systems view or theory as a model for interpreting the behavior of congregations and their members. Since Bowen's theory is based on an evolutionary biological model of living organisms and since the church from the beginning has been a living entity, the theory has been used to interpret and explain life within churches and synagogues. The third chapter describes a project in which clergy were asked to participate in a limited number of small group sessions over a 4-6 month period. The sessions involved some interactive teaching about natural family systems theory and, after having done some family of origin exploration, each participant presented a genogram of his family to the group for processing, utilizing natural family systems concepts."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135678389551104,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:54:53.679Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:50:15Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:54:08Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"a9f2eb4c-3c4c-4ff8-a3f9-f80c8f424526","accessControl_ssim":["3a377845-7d70-4c97-9023-8824d413dad2"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Living with God in our culture : a manual for directors facilitating an Ignatian group retreat"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:50:09Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:02:53Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["85fe7957-0e37-447f-a0b4-81cd517e0172"],"hasLease_ssim":["49e4e49a-7d1d-43c6-b0b6-8b2e446e20ce"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["1996"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Stories of real people with AIDS, who utilized hospice care at the end of life, were gathered by a hospice chaplain, and can be used for individual growth or in a group setting.Ten stories are given in chapter format. The stories reflect the diversity within the AIDS population: injection drug users, gay men, heterosexual individuals, transsexuals, and those who care for people with AIDS.Each chapter consists of the primary story of the person with AIDS, followed by theological reflections, concluding with a page of reflection questions.Theological themes include, but are not limited to: the role and scope of the church; creation; death and its impact on family, children, caregivers; healing; sin; inherited brokenness; angels unaware; forgiveness; heaven; presence of God; community; rejection/acceptance; disease; eternal life; grief and loss; evangelism; rituals of inclusion; and, resurrection.Reflection questions are based upon the author's long experience with small groups. The questions build from chapter one to ten as the group is first introduced to the subject matter of AIDS and to each other, closing with termination of the group at the conclusion of the ten sessions. An annotated bibliography on AIDS literature is included as a resource, as are appendices on an overview of spiritual care to the person with AIDS, and small group guidelines. The project shows that by using story, a person or a small group can learn about providing spiritual care to the person with AIDS."],"license_tesim":["https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"related_url_tesim":["https://repository.westernsem.edu/xmlui/handle/1866/1615"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135636901593088,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:54:14.113Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:49:48Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:54:26Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"bc5af19a-1dfa-4914-a579-6f572f4712af","accessControl_ssim":["52f362af-a9fc-42d4-b92c-cae571b16f30"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Ignatian spirituality in a Presbyterian context : a suggested Presbyterian use of the Ignatian method of spiritual exercises"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:49:47Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:33:34Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["2054b272-8cf6-4f36-9e22-fe4dc007cd28"],"hasLease_ssim":["a6af6197-98b4-4c3d-bff3-c12578970f57"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["1995"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Here the work of the Holy Spirit may be experienced as a gentle· prodding toward growth and wholeness, a wholeness such as is perfectly seen in Jesus Christ. The model uses the modern therapeutic technique of Dr. David Grove in conjunction with the biblical psalms of lament.David Grove maintains that people use metaphors to describe past traumatic experiences, and that these metaphors provide the key for healing these wounds, or the 'wounded child within,' in the past where they first occurred. Grove's therapeutic process emphasizes careful attention to the office setting, healing the wounded child within in the past, allowing the client's use of metaphor to express the trauma, and strict regard to the 'clean' language used by the therapist. Grove also contends that the wounded child within is 'frozen' in time, and the therapist must help guide the client through and beyond that experience so that healing may occur. This is achieved through an u nderstanding of the information stored in the child within, the memories which describe the environment outside the child's body, and the bodily boundaries described in metaphors."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135700117094400,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:55:14.400Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:49:47Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:54:02Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"9bfa79ba-c12e-45ea-a144-47e472aa06c7","accessControl_ssim":["6f929026-759a-42a8-8f79-a788164faedf"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Growth toward faith maturity through a collegiate chapel program"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:49:46Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:41:54Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["f58a410a-2e88-4e32-9f47-12d539a30cf5"],"hasLease_ssim":["6d571433-d696-4c56-ae46-a6029a1413c6"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["1996"],"location_tesim":["Iowa"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. It benefits directly from Lilly-funded research conducted by the Search Institute of Minneapolis and published as Effective Christian Education: A National Study of Protestant Congregations. The research for this project was conducted while actively performing the ministry of chaplain at Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa. This project strongly suggests that intentionally planning to address these eight dimensions of mature faith in a collegiate chapel worship program, together with supplemental experiences, can encourage growth toward faith maturity. While measurable results isolating the impact of the chapel program are probably not possible, in an Appendix, findings of research conducted on Northwestern's campus using a Search Institute instrument are presented which tend to confirm the importance of being cognizant of a picture of mature faith when planning a chapel program."],"license_tesim":["https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"related_url_tesim":["https://repository.westernsem.edu/xmlui/handle/1866/1637"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135625578020864,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:54:03.314Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:49:46Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:51:31Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"2af14567-ac6e-47c0-ba61-148476faa35b","accessControl_ssim":["8ad80f0b-2859-4e79-8c61-a834286652c8"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Sound the trumpet : an adventure in shared ministry"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:49:42Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:23:21Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["bcc7f93d-6211-45cf-8e8f-7e652f53d9ce"],"hasLease_ssim":["894ce8ef-8273-43d5-9507-3c5598380832"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["1995"],"location_tesim":["California"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. As a matter of fact, the Pauline Epistles were the primary source of my thinking. Beyond this, it is safe to say that three sections of Scripture formed the core of my ecclesiology in relationship to Shared Ministry (Romans 12; 1 Corinthians 12-15 and Ephesians 4). Each of these passages teaches the importance of spiritual gifts among the body of believers. This limited perspective led me to read the entire bible and look for any passages which dealt with shared ministry (of any kind). The second learning unit in my program pushed me beyond the New Testament 'gift-centered' approach and helped me develop a broader understanding of ministry and God's people."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135469902233601,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:51:34.850Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:49:19Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:55:33Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"f96778ef-3cff-4639-933f-f3a59dc80bb7","accessControl_ssim":["c173649c-4966-426b-8e54-ad3a72b47012"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Celebrating diversity : a seminar for the local church using Jungian psychological type theory to promote tolerance of divergent opinions on non-essentials of the faith"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:49:18Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T05:15:02Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["2380f1f6-56c0-48db-830b-4cd19dcdee62"],"hasLease_ssim":["bd94f644-d6bc-48b8-b000-5e8061186fc0"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["1993"],"location_tesim":["Michigan"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Each unit contains a group discussion guide. The first three study units present a biblical perspective on diversity of opinion in the church. Unit one is an investigation of diversity in the New Testament church designed to demonstrate that a romanticized conception of the early years of the Christian era as a time of uncomplicated unity and undisturbed unanimity of opinion is inconsistent with the testimony of the biblical material. Unit two is an examination of New Testament unity 'in Christ.' Unit three is a presentation of the strategies, attitudes, and skills necessary to promote the celebration of diversity of opinion in the local church. The second set of three study units presents a psychological explanation for diversity in the church based on the personality type theory of Carl G. Jung. Unit four contains an introduction to Jung and his type theory, style, and religious attitude. Unit five is a detailed explication of psychological type. Unit six offers descriptions of the sixteen psychological types isolated by the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. The final three study units present applications of psychological type theory to three areas of significant diversity in the church. Unit seven addresses differences in worship and prayer styles. Unit eight investigates different approaches to biblical interpretation. Unit nine describes different concepts of ministry according to a four part Sloat-Bailey ministry gird and demonstrates a correspondence between these divisions and the functions of type theory."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135721698885632,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:55:34.982Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":13089,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"D.Min.
