An interest in this subject emerged as a result of the author's professional development in industrial, educational, and ministerial settings.Chapter 1 explores selected biblical passages from both the Old and New Testament and selected theological themes which relate to the subject of transformational leadership in the church. Saint Paul's writings are the primary material used for the motivation and purpose of leadership. Chapter 2 is a report on selected literature dealing with transformational leadership. The scholarly contributions of James MacGregor Burns and Bernard M. Bass are given primary consideration.Chapter 3 describes the procedures used in the research part of this paper. The thesis tested in the research is that the core values of a transformational leader are different from the core values of other types of leaders and that in both cases those core values influence the style of leadership chosen.Chapter 4 summarizes the results of the research and provides interpretation of the data collected. Chapter One presents perceptions of power from a purely social science perspective and from a theological perspective.Chapter Two investigates some sections of the Old and New Testaments, and some formative theologians who have had great influence on various Christian belief systems, to determine if these sources favor the dominance of men over women. Chapter Three is devoted to how women see themselves in the current situation in society, in the church, and in marriage. Some feminist authors and social scientists who discuss equality of the sexes or the lack of it are given the opportunity to state their cases.Chapter Four is a presentation of three case studies in which various psychotherapeutic models were used in thecounseling sessions. This chapter demonstrates the impact of the abuse of power, and suggests that correcting this misuse of power gives hope of establishing the solidity such unions should have.Chapter Five is a series of summary reflections based on the project as a whole, with particular attention to the three case studies. The vulnerable sharing of power in a loving way does not diminish the bonds of marriage. The era of change in which we live demands a ministry based upon these essential qualities. These elements may well be nurtured by the ministry of a spiritual director. In fact, the responsibility of finding words to express the compassion of God is seen as an essential service to be rendered to priests by spiritual directors. Such service can be provided by the director and received by the directee only in the context of the process of contemplation. Part of the process of this project was the search for an effective method of thoughtfulness and careful, interested dialogue, that is, contemplation.  Such in roads into the natures of God and humankind help find words for the right questions and find expression in the compassion modeled by Jesus.  Taking the lead of St. Paul, the format of the epistle was chosen. The practice of catechetical preaching is now in decline, both in quality and quantity.Chapter Two deals with the problems of catechetical preaching. It is often repetitious from year to year and therefore boring. Preachers sometimes brings theological presuppositions to their preaching that are different from the views expressed by the Heidelberg Catechism. Chapter Three gives us reasons why catechetical preaching can still be useful and relevant. The Heidelberg Catechism provides us with a useful framework of thought and confession. Its emphasis on the promises of God can be a very effective antidote to legalism and cold orthodoxy. Chapter Four studies and critiques the approaches to catechetical preaching of Peter Y. Three eras of conference history are described: 1906-1930, 1930-1962, 1962-present.Chapter II is a biblical study of service including an examination of Isaiah's suffering servant texts, Mark 10:45 and its Christological basis for service by each Christian, and a study of four New Testament texts frequently noted as influencing our understanding of service and deacons: Acts 6:1-6, Philippians 1:1, 1 Timothy 3:8-13, and Romans 16:1-2.Chapter III examines the theology of service in the Reformed tradition by considering statements in John Calvin; 16th and 17th century Dutch Reformed Church Orders; the 1978-1979 CRC synodical position on worldhunger, 'And He Had Compassion on Them'; Karl Barth; and The Deacons Handbook.Chapter IV considers similarities and differences in the structures of deacons' conferences by comparing past and present conference constitutions. An appeal is made for greater uniformity for deacons' conferences and a new model constitution is submitted for consideration.Chapter V examines deacons' conference constitutions to discover how people become leaders of conferences and what their responsibilities are. Four circles of leadership are detailed, and uniform titles and job descriptions are suggested. Poppen  was  printed,  I  was  searching for  a  topic  for  my  project.  The  project  evolved  out  of  a wedding  of  Poppen's   concern  for  clergy  immobility  and  longer pastorates  and  my  concern  for  good  preaching. A  search  for  information  turned  up  few  resources.  I could  only  find  two  books  and  a  few  articles  on long pastorates. No  one had  written  extensively  on the combination of long pastorates  and  preaching.  The combination  seemed  to  be  a  current  and  fascinating  topic  for further  investigation.  The  project  evolved  to  the  point where  I  sought  to  understand  the  relationship  of  good preaching  to  the  healthy,  long  pastorate. The  project  looked  to  the Reformed  Church  in  America  as  the  larger  arena.  It  is  my denominational  affiliation.  The  project  narrowed  the  arena to  those  churches  having  long  pastorates  concurrent  with  the beginning  of  the  investigation. Thus the process of self definition becomes a leadership strategy for clergy as well as therapists.This paper integrates family systems thinking as it addresses the issues of ministry today, particularly the leadership issue.The Introduction reflects on Jesus through systems concepts, looks at the 'call' of clergy through a fable, and focuses on common clergy stories operating in three interlocked systems. Chapter I introduces systems thinking through Bowen Family System Theory . Chapter II briefly describes the application of family theory by Edwin Friedman to the religious community. Chapter III utilizes a qualitative methodology in the use of three case studies focusing on clergy salary, a father's death, and supervision of an intern. The paper is composed of three chapters, a bibliography, and two extended appendixes which are annotated bibliographies of research aids for use in biblical preaching from the Old Testament and the New Testament.Chapter One is an analysis of those factors in the author's background that motivated a search for a deeper level of scholarship in the use of Scripture. The emphasis of the chapter is on the influences and results of anti-intellectualism in the theological milieu of a holiness/fundamental radition.Chapter Two focuses on selected hermeneutical concepts that should be addressed if one is to have an enlarging view of Scripture and its use in preaching. The inter-relationships of the terms hermeneutics, exegesis and biblical preaching are discussed. A clearer understanding of the inspiration of Scripture is examined from a cultural-historical point of view. And, the Bible's statement of its own inspiration is approached through a presentation of II Timothy 3:16.Chapter Three is concerned with the selection and use of research aids for biblical preaching. Guidelines are offered for selecting commentaries. Principles to follow in using commentaries and other research aids are also included. The model ties together the events in divorce with the affective grief cycle. This synthesis shows how the emotional stages can be seen responding to specific losses involved.Chapter Two provides components and strategies for effective programs addressed to the needs identified. These are drawn from research in thesocial sciences and illustrated by examples from selected programs in use across the country. The methods favored are also shown to be expressed in biblical models of ministry.Chapter Three describes a variety of forms for this ministry that would be appropriate for different communities. Guidelines for selection and training of lay ministers are provided. Detailed learning objectives to guide the ministry are suggested.This project shows that a specialized divorce ministry is, indeed, worth doing. Measurable results can be expected.
