Project"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Leon  W White"],"subject_tesim":["Congregations","Church work with the aged","Older people--Religious life"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This study reports findings based upon reading, Part I, and research, Part II, which describe how the experiences of aging can affect the attitudes older church members have about their congregations.The opening chapter of Part I examines how the theology, leadership style, and training of clergy can influence attitudes of the elderly. This is followed by an examination of personal and social forces capable of affecting how older persons feel about life and themselves as well as their congregations. Also discussed is the discovery and the stewardship of those special gifts God gives the Christian in later life.Part II describes a research project conducted among 451 active church members fifty-five years of age or older. Using a 103-item questionnaire distributed among members willing to participate from a number of churches, the study sought to determine, define, and measure the religiosity of these members using factor analysis. The items loaded into five factors named Orthodoxy, Personal Faith, Treatment, Satisfaction with Life, and Dissatisfaction with Life. By comparison and correlation of these factors, and of items within and between the factors, it was found that this population of older church members has a positive attitude about life and more so about their congregations. The attitudes of men and women were similar regarding life, but regarding their congregations women felt more positive. Men want to feel more useful to their congregations. It suggests that metaphor is the basis of illustrative material. The paper is composed of four chapters and a bibliography.Chapter One discusses preaching as oral communication. The emphasis of the chapter is on the preacher as communicator. Obstacles to communication are examined and ways to overcome the obstacles are suggested. The use of metaphor as an aid to communication is emphasized.Chapter Two examines communication in terms of the hearers. Audience analysis, cultural influences, and the hearer's perception of the world are cited as information areas the preacher will want to consider when preparing the sermon. The use of metaphor to help build meaningful relationships is discussed.Chapter Three focuses on metaphor as an aid to preaching. A Biblical basis for the use of figures of speech in preaching is studied. Metaphor is defined by its function and value for illustrating sermons. Types and sources of metaphors are explored. Practical concerns, such as the placement and quantity of metaphors in a sermon, conclude the chapter.Chapter Four is concerned with the evaluation of metaphors and guidelines for their use in preaching. At the conclusion of a sermon, immediate feedback is useful for measuring the clarity of a metaphor, but long-term feedback is also necessary to evaluate the appropriateness of the metaphors to the hearers by observing the assimilation of the metaphors into their life and vocabulary. These  are  persons  and  families  with  special  hurts and  dreams,  unique  pressures,  limitations,  and  demands,   abundant  abilities,  and  significant  goals.  These  are  persons  in need  of  a  cooperative  ministry--both  the  receiving  and  the doing  of  ministry.  Our  arena  is  the  wider  community  of  faith as  it  exists  in  that  special  entity  known  to  be  our  vocation, home ,  career,  and  lifestyle--the  United  States  Air  Force. I  first  became  interested  in  the  subject  of  singles  and single  parents  during  a  tour  as  the  religious  education  representative  on  the  USAF  Chaplain  Resource  Board. I demonstrate that the model is closely associated with personal assumptions , is based on particular theoretical constructs , and can be utilized in interpersonal interaction.The first chapter lists particular personal assumptions and states the importance of articulating assumptions. Systems theory, which embraces a theory of process, is outlined in Chapter II. Tri-Modal Structuring, with its three modes of interaction, is described in Chapter III. During  the  twenty  years  I  served  in  that region  as  a  missionary  of  the  Reformed  Church  in  America,  many times  I  was  asked  about  this  man  who  was  one  of  my  early predecessors .  Snatches  of  information  I  heard  suggested  that  he had  been  a  very  important  person.  Reading  I  had  done  on the history  of  Protestant  witness  in  Japan  had  made  little-or  no note  of  his contribution .  More recently,  my  growing  interest in  the  early  history  of  the  work  of the  Reformed  Church  in America  in  southwestern  Japan  led  me  to  the  discovery  of  how really  valuable  the  ministry  of  Henry  Stout  had  been  to  the development  of that  work.  H.V.S. Peeke, a contemporary,  said of  the  Stouts  in  1922,  'This couple were  strong  in piety  and purpose,  and  their  imprint  is  left  upon the  Kyushu  field  today to  a  degree,  perhaps not  fully realized  by  their  successors.' I  have  now  come  to  realize  that  their  tremendous  influence and  significant  contribution have  never  been  widely  recognized or properly  appreciated.  I  perceive  Henry  Stout  to  be  the  sin­gle  most-important  missionary  pioneer  from  the  Reformed  and Presbyterian  tradition  to  work  in  southwestern  Japan  in  the nineteenth  century.  However ,  he  is  little  known,  and  evidently no  detailed  biographical  presentation  of his  life  and  work  has ever  been  made  available  to  date.  It  is  my  hope  that  the  fol­lowing  pages  will  provide  useful  information and  insights, not only  about  this  person, but  also  into  the  missionary  task and life  situation  in  which  his  lifetime  of  service was  offered. It is especially important to the minister-therapist.  The concept and its particular application to the ministry are discussed below.In medieval Europe, the Guild provided a stable caste society within which human vocation was so much a part of self that it became a part of personal identity and self-concept.  My family name, DeVoogd, is an  illustration of such a time in history when one of my forebearers was a caretaker on a large estate, and he took the name of 'keeper', voogd in Dutch, as his surname.  This forefather described himself by the occupation that he held and even took his name from it.  Today in our technological society, the mechanization of the concept of occupation has made it possible for a person to shift jobs easily in order to make a living.  The work concept, while still a part of our thinking,  is now considered as external to the self.
