Uganda has suffered a lot under the leadership of Idi Amin and Milton Obote. The country has gone through political, social, economic, and religious changes. These changes have posed many challenges to the church in my context, the Anglican church of Uganda. It is clear that there is a need to engage lay Christians in response to these spiritual and pastoral challenges in our country and church, specifically in the Mukono Cathedral. The laity should not be engaged in church ministry to help the clergy, but to do the ministry because it belongs to them. In addition, the laity are gifted greatly, but they are not used enough.Does it mean that the laity are taking away the work of the ordained? Surely not, because this ministry belongs to the laity before it belongs to the ordained as discussed in this paper. This paper also discusses the biblical mandate to equip all the people for God's ministry. Paul discusses the gifts which were given to the church for the purpose of equipping the saints (cf. Ephesians 4:11-12). By equipping the saints in this context the laity, we are strengthening the church which is the body of Christ.Jesus Christ gave us an example of how important equipping is. He identified a few men, and then trained and taught them for the ministry. His methods are worth taking. This paper gives us a case study of a leadership training done in Mukono to prepare the ordained to equip the laity. All the recommendations indicate that there is a need to involve the laity in God's ministry. There is a need for the collaborative ministry."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135725150797824,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:55:38.273Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:41:57Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:52:15Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"4e338bb2-a1f1-4a7a-b0c3-fa54578bb0ba","accessControl_ssim":["ebbc4895-e579-4352-add8-8c5182138279"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Principles of pastoral presence and leadership within the congregational emotional system"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:41:56Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:25:42Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["91519baa-9e00-4175-9321-d160d31a7ffc"],"hasLease_ssim":["c1cce13d-e1a4-43fd-b1bf-d8857cd112e7"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["2006"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. There is a proliferation for a 'feel good' attitude in our American culture that denies or limits constructive expressions of lament, but strives for success and accelerated achievement. Theologically, our society narrowly views God as a therapeutic being who 'helps us' when we need to feel good. Mennonite youth are not immune to the societal pressures and various mental health concerns that persist. Lamenting Youth, Believing Youth explores the role of biblical lament in faith formation and pastoral care of early, middle, and late Mennonite adolescents as a response to contemporary cultural realities. The thesis of this Doctor of Ministry project is that Mennonite pastors and youth workers will be motivated to engage youth in expressions of biblical lament by enabling youth to write their own prayers of lament. After describing a theology and understanding of biblical lament, I then explore how regular engagement in practices of lament will aid in the faith formation and pastoral care of adolescents. The method I used to investigate this thesis was to equip three different youth pastors to lead members of their junior and senior high youth groups through a series of timed-writing prayer exercises of lament. In addition, one pastor led this same practice with his young adult church group, while I conducted it with a college youth ministry class comprised mainly of young adults. Observations were then made from the questionnaires that adolescents in this study completed, as well as from their voluntarily submitted prayers of lament. I discovered that young people were comfortable engaging this prayer discipline and appreciated the opportunity to express their emotions to God."],"license_tesim":["https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"related_url_tesim":["https://repository.westernsem.edu/xmlui/handle/1866/1591"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135520022069249,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:52:22.648Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:41:57Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:53:44Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"8da45d0b-f386-4951-b1fb-202d8e1ea881","accessControl_ssim":["6d5318ee-5f2c-4c3a-b2bd-1191c16337f9"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A Wesleyan symphony of discipleship : the development of an academy of lay ministry"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:41:56Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:17:13Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["a07a1d61-1624-4090-b854-a1a1952b27b2"],"hasLease_ssim":["00b5cd32-b77f-4b38-b80e-fcef9aff85de"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["George Brown"],"year_tesim":["2007"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. In familiar musical terminology, the 'Pre-lude' establishes an introductory context. A 'Post-lude ' is a musical term that describes a concluding statement that often summarizes the motifs that have been introduced since the Prelude. Pazmino creatively suggests that the lude is the subject between Prelude and Postlude. It is the primary motif or theme. The 'Lude' may function as the playful way that a subject is developed and communicated. The author identified and developed a musical analogy and applied it to the Christian Education experience. Teaching, (according to Pazmino), is like a performance where the teacher functions as a conductor who orchestrates his or her classroom, not in an entertaining way, but rather in creating a teaching/learning environment with and for the student. lt is an appropriate analogy. As a conductor, every rehearsal is like a laboratory classroom. The conductor teaches, gives opportunity for creativity, motivates the performer, and corrects mistakes so that the ensemble and conductor are participating in a learning process on the way toward performance."],"license_tesim":["https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"related_url_tesim":["https://repository.westernsem.edu/xmlui/handle/1866/1587"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135607217455104,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:53:45.804Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:41:25Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:51:35Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"2d658f37-c105-458c-9ad8-e5a3ca81e7a9","accessControl_ssim":["8bf23cee-f053-4bab-b7aa-93fbe0b559e8"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Work matters : toward a model of congregational public theologizing about faith and work"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:41:24Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:27:25Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["66e5e1ba-f17d-4575-b5c6-42b8b2bdafc4"],"hasLease_ssim":["59fa05fe-722c-4ed3-9bbd-832dd5e12936"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["George R Hunsberger"],"year_tesim":["2010"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. The research shows that a small group format that includes an introduction to theology, an introduction to a theology of economics, an introduction to cultural interpretation and leadership, together with an immediate application of these to workplace issues does enable participants to engage in public theologizing about workplace issues. The research also shows that an emphasis on personal development that includes Christian spiritual components is highly motivating to those who wish to engage in this area of public theology. And this combination between the personal and the professional is profound. I began to wonder why what was happening at church was affecting me so much personally. I believe it has to do with the nature of ministry. We are often dealing with ultimate issues-matters of life and death. And not just physical life and death, but spiritual, and eternal. In order to survive, then, I found myself asking some big questions of myself and of God. Why is this so difficult? Why am I struggling so much? Why do I keep getting stuck in the same place? From theological conversation to a spattering of writers around the world beginning to explore what the missional church might look like in the local church, I found few tools for the leaders of the local Christian communities to help people j oin this movement in practical ways. As I began to work in my own congregation trying to help the church move outward into the neighborhood, I realized the need to provide a resource to not change a church, but help followers of Jesus Christ begin exploring a missional life. Through the process of community storytelling, the foll owing project provides a path, through a Bible study format, for an individual and the Christian community to discover their personal God story, God's story, and the story of their neighborhoods. Where these stories overlap becomes a place for both the individual and their Christian community to start moving from 'doing' the work of a missional church to living a missional life with Jesus Christ.Being led by the Holy Spirit, the journey begins in the waters of Ezekiel 47:1-12 as individuals and communities discovers the different depths of their God story. They then travel into their neighborhood through Matthew 5:3-12 discovering where Jesus Christ is already at work in the emerging reign of God. Finally, through the exploration of 2 Corinthians 4, both the individual and community discover the life they are called to live as missionaries in their own land. I have spent the past years walking through this process in the lives of both individuals and communities to discover a practical means to move people out of the pews of their church into a life of joining Jesus Christ in the emerging reign of God."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135628782469120,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:54:06.369Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:41:18Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:51:20Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"231605d1-d5eb-4772-aaf0-52c45ae6f0ff","accessControl_ssim":["957d40ff-e558-4a5d-80e1-5c4d623ffb08"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The missional heritage of the people called Methodist : the story of five Iowa United Methodist congregations on a reclamation journey"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:41:12Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:10:15Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["1bed5e05-f2e6-47cf-93fd-b810feded732"],"hasLease_ssim":["e38f4397-d49d-48ca-b092-93003f3de5ed"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["2010"],"location_tesim":["Iowa"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. In the United States, church membership, worship attendance and the number of baptisms continue to decline, funding for connectional ministries continues to decline and grows weaker in the current economic crisis; and the 'warm heart' of John Wesley's movement has become a 'contented heart' of institutional inertia; and the 1970's organization and structure we live with is not sufficient, nimble or responsive to the fast changing 21st Century world we inhabit. The missional heritage of the people called Methodist offers clues to a way forward for United Methodists who long to be part of a missional movement once again. Although John Wesley would not have recognized the term 'missional' in the way it is understood today, he instinctively shaped his movement around the development of missional identity (accountable discipleship in community) and missional engagement with those on the periphery of society (submitting to become more vile). Perhaps by reclaiming those early impulses and shaping them for relevance in the 21st century, United Methodist congregations can reclaim their missional heritage and break the institutional inertia that keeps them operating under the assumptions of Christendom."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135458268282880,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:51:23.755Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:40:54Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:52:31Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"5a6f202c-c15d-4944-b79d-14c3b803b5ce","accessControl_ssim":["e4c481bb-a9b4-4f2e-aa14-f8f36486484b"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A tale of two cities divided : in search of radical reconciliation"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:40:53Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:47:11Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["219c555b-cfe7-4106-a95c-14577d0f872c"],"hasLease_ssim":["bb2f2c85-0e8c-4574-aa8c-20e30a00cbe8"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Kristen Deede Johnson Ph.D."],"year_tesim":["2011"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. These histories show the development of the cities and how their histories have played a big part in shaping how things are today. After probing the history of the area I take a theological and exegetical look at the idea of reconciliation, as engaged in the Bible and the work of practitioners and scholars. The thesis then focuses on interviews I conducted, using the research method of Narrative Inquiry, with people that live in the communities of Benton Harbor and St. Joseph, and, more specifically, people from Union Memorial African Methodist Episcopal Church and Zion Evangelical United Church of Christ. Using these two congregations as a baseline for study, I interviewed a cross-section of both churches. The Narrative Inquiry approach helped me to identify similarities that existed between the two congregations. After the interviews were concluded they were analyzed and then presented to the participants from the two congregations for review. As I engaged the participants in this time of reflection I explored how future conversations or collaboration in the area of reconciliation might be beneficial to all parties concerned. I believe relationships were established through this project and that this was a measurable response in my thesis. By this measure, my project was very successful. Before this project I had little to no contact with my neighbors. Now I have a place to start and build upon as I look to the future of St. Joseph and Benton Harbor with a great deal of hope and passion. My final chapter is a retelling of the story of the tensions between the two cities in light of what I learned throughout the project and an anticipation of what steps we might take towards reconciliation."],"license_tesim":["https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"related_url_tesim":["https://repository.westernsem.edu/xmlui/handle/1866/1494"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135530370465792,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:52:32.516Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":13089,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"D.Min.
