John 4 will yield the four congruent steps from outreach to embracing. This project employs a mixed methodology drawn from Richard Osmer’s 4- step Consensus Model for Practical Theology and Robert O. Brinkerhoff’s Success Case research method. The success case method brings stories from three actual congregations who exercise embracing practices. The stories are accompanied by song lyrics that harken from the receiving end of the apartheid.Outreach programs have been established by evangelical Christian churches in America to respond to the needs of impoverished communities, to evangelize non-professing citizens, and to attend to systems of injustice.1 These programs have successfully led to the physical growth of the Christian church in America. The church can celebrate the countless children fed, numerous communities resourced, and all the followers of Christ who have actively complied with the teachings of Jesus in the Bible because of its efforts. Christian outreach programs in America have done a great deal to help less fortunate people, but they have also done a fair amount of harm to those they endeavor to aid.
https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/
https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/
https://repository.westernsem.edu/xmlui/handle/1866/1987
["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing
deposited
Western Theological Seminary
c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb
open
Metadata Only
rim.ir.atla.com
Etd
public","work_editor
admin
ckarpinski@atla.com
["Etd
5cee12de-65fa-4ff8-be00-0de7ea6213b1
7c9a9b05-5b4b-4e62-b411-24fd466eb412
ckarpinski@atla.com
ckarpinski@atla.com
Faithful conversations : same-sex relationships and the Christian faith
["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8
d1d6d9de-546c-4544-8099-76192659588e
bec6ba26-61bc-4c91-ae92-29911691d42d
1
1
Atla RIM
Doctor of Ministry
Western Theological Seminary
George R. The project consisted of a congregation-wide event called Faithful Conversations: Same-Sex Relationships and the Christian Faith. First, the pastors complexified the conversation around same-sex marriage and the Christian faith beyond for and against by presenting five faithful Christian responses to same-sex marriage. Second, a licensed therapist facilitated a panel discussion where people holding different perspectives on same-sex marriage shared their stories, values, and viewpoints. Third, the facilitator invited the congregation to interact with panel members using an adaptation of the Restorative Circles process for people experiencing conflict. Data from the project reveal that this congregation defied the pattern of division over same-sex marriage. In fact, the congregation grew in authenticity of relationships, mutual understanding, and theological insight. Listening to the stories of post-Christian people gives voice to a growing population of people who find themselves unaffected by the voice of the church and find little or no connection to the Christian message. Pastors and worship leaders listening to the stories of these people can better draw out themes in the liturgy that will communicate not just to Christian, but post-Christian people as well. The purpose of my project is to help worship leaders and designers consider how they can speak to and be heard by both Christian and post-Christian people in worship. The findings of my project will illustrate the ways post-Christian people might best engage in the liturgy and offer insights to worship leaders and designers on how to enable this engagement.
https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/
https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/
https://repository.westernsem.edu/xmlui/handle/1866/9319
["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing
deposited
Western Theological Seminary
c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb
open
Metadata Only
rim.ir.atla.com
Etd
public","work_editor
admin
ckarpinski@atla.com
["Etd
033e2065-12db-4d7e-97bf-9528f2dce723
8657ddef-2e71-45c9-b3d2-8a9a9b6cfedf
ckarpinski@atla.com
ckarpinski@atla.com
Preaching and missional engagement : indwelling the Word, performing the Word, engaging the World
["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8
f80271db-6d82-406a-8167-67ee7c9f6502
8f12e6be-1409-4edd-94db-7b1228726eca
1
1
Atla RIM
Doctor of Ministry
Western Theological Seminary
Kyle J.A. Through conversations with members of the Pillar congregation, as well as reflections from other pastors who practice a similar homiletical method, there is evidence that this homiletical method influences congregational missional engagement. The process is long and requires patience, but the stories suggest there is a connection. As this project unfolds, I do hope to demonstrate through the lives of some of the participants in Pillar’s life and worship that there is a relationship between indwelling the Word for the sermon and a congregation’s missional life. I intend to offer a homiletical vision rooted in the missionary work of Leslie Newbigin, and the pastoral work of Eugene Peterson. This vision is demonstrated in the church’s first sermon by the Apostle Peter at Pentecost. A homiletical vision that calls the preacher to indwell the story of God as it is given in Scripture and offered to the people of God such that the missional engagement of a congregation increases. I intend to offer a homiletical method congruent with this vision that engages Newbigin’s notion of indwelling the word and Peterson’s notion of the pastoral ministry. In this way it will bring into conversation two leading voices in different sectors of the Western church today who are often not recognized as calling the church to a similar vision. A consequent contribution of this project will be to identify and introduce a theological paradigm operative in both Newbigin and Peterson that neither clearly articulate as a pattern.
https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/
https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/
https://repository.westernsem.edu/xmlui/handle/1866/9314
["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing
deposited
Western Theological Seminary
c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb
open
Metadata Only
rim.ir.atla.com
Etd
public","work_editor
admin
ckarpinski@atla.com
["Etd
3f134557-9195-4e53-ae6f-c950f845a85b
afb57c42-4fbb-4152-84c9-bfea6d4922f8
ckarpinski@atla.com
ckarpinski@atla.com
Mindfulness for healthcare staff with direct patient care
["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8
9d7cd2a9-120e-4c51-bbc7-e34daa613405
35fdf359-d028-4cdf-8ae2-3eeff8e1eea8
1
1
Atla RIM
Doctor of Ministry
Western Theological Seminary
Chuck DeGroat Ph.D.
2019
D.Min. I experience firsthand their stress and anxiousness which results in high staff turnover and highly emotional reactions. Reaching a place of engaged separation allows one to be involved compassionately and fully in the care and concern of another without being lost in the storyline of the other’s personal history. In an increasingly more anxious and violent society, we need healthcare staff practicing mindfulness to embody well-being and personal health. When the staff is stressed and anxious, so are those under their care -- an observation applicable to the home, church, and other areas of life outside the hospital walls. In my particular context of Memorial Hospital in South Bend, Indiana, I examined the factors that lead to burnout and compassion fatigue as well as the history of contemplation as it translates into our current practices of mindfulness. I researched and articulated five mindful practices that seem to be the most effective for the least amount of effort. Ten of the CVICU staff at Memorial Hospital were asked to participate in mindfulness engagements to attempt to measure the effectiveness of mindfulness in mitigating the stress and burnout. The study results were sparse; however, they point to mindfulness requiring both time and energy to truly become a helpful practice for managing stress.
https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/
https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/
https://repository.westernsem.edu/xmlui/handle/1866/9316
["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing
deposited
Western Theological Seminary
c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb
open
Metadata Only
rim.ir.atla.com
Etd
work_editor","public
admin
ckarpinski@atla.com
["Etd
0ca5d4f4-20b7-4886-89b7-17286d8a2b2b
169d842f-0517-40cf-8bee-ae3854ca97b7
ckarpinski@atla.com
ckarpinski@atla.com
Pacing presence : impact of relational ministry course for graduates of Kuyper College working with adolescents
["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8
1fff8011-b1ac-4f73-af76-3c4988161b45
b841428f-42cd-4370-8cf0-6531429d1362
1
1
Atla RIM
Doctor of Ministry
Western Theological Seminary
Sarah Jean Barton Th.D.
2019
D.Min. The outcomes will be pedagogical suggestions for the course and content revisions to improve the impact of the relational ministry course for future students, as well as suggestions for parents and the church about how adults can earn the right to be heard and develop deep and meaningful relationships.
https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/
https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/
https://repository.westernsem.edu/xmlui/handle/1866/9330
["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing
deposited
Western Theological Seminary
c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb
open
Metadata Only
rim.ir.atla.com
Etd
public","work_editor
admin
ckarpinski@atla.com
["Etd
197cf31c-2a47-4025-ac38-900185f739e5
2eb2d916-61dd-4d75-8df4-7eda96aa861c
ckarpinski@atla.com
ckarpinski@atla.com
Asking, giving, and receiving : a practical spirituality of Christian fundraising in Young Life
["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8
39047cf5-9523-42f8-a30f-02db09f541cf
d55089ca-9155-43c4-9599-6e249f515fd2
1
1
Atla RIM
Doctor of Ministry
Western Theological Seminary
Benjamin T Connor Ph.D.
2019
D.Min. Young Life staff members are trained in how to proclaim the gospel and program activities in terms of discipleship and spiritual formation, yet field staff members have been trained to use a different paradigm that is secularized for fundraising. There is potential for a language shift and corresponding paradigm shift in fundraising training that could guide the Young Life fundraiser to venture into a more familiar and theological concept: community instead of commerce and spiritual formation instead of commodification. The two core research questions that I am addressing in this project are: In what ways does raising support for Young Life connect to the practice of faith? And, how can fundraising be re-conceived in terms of Christian spirituality? Data has been collected from personal interviews, Young Life archives, books written about Young Life, and published reports within the organization. This project aims to discover the fundraising history of Young Life, critically analyze this history, extend a practical spirituality of fundraising while exploring theologies of asking, giving, and receiving, and provide adaptations for current problematic financial models in the organization.
https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/
https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/
https://repository.westernsem.edu/xmlui/handle/1866/9315
["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing
deposited
Western Theological Seminary
c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb
open
Metadata Only
rim.ir.atla.com
Etd
work_editor","public
admin
ckarpinski@atla.com
["Etd
3e0e0592-b418-43f7-ad0e-421bbfee5ffc
86fca164-e746-4da3-9e4a-5aaedc73281f
ckarpinski@atla.com
ckarpinski@atla.com
The Gospel : the power of God for salvation mobilizing the church for evangelism to Muslims
["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8
757846c9-e37a-4c5b-ac95-9f2b6e611b7b
51803b2d-904a-4e66-a366-a93fa1358e89
1
1
Atla RIM
Doctor of Ministry
Western Theological Seminary
2018
D.Min. Many current Islamic regimes have been destabilized contributing to Muslims experiencing cognitive dissonance, disillusionment and despair. Christians now have the opportunity and urgent commission to witness to Muslims on their block, at their workplace, attending schools with their children, and attending universities. The scale of the upheaval in Islam demands an all-Church emergency mobilization training effort to fast track Church engagement with Muslims.Evangelical leaders that I have worked with my whole ministry career are asking for Biblically faithful training for evangelism and missions. Many existing courses on Islam commend highly contextualized methodologies, dynamic equivalent models, peacemaking and friendship. They do not teach the fundamentals of evangelism, of communicating the Gospel for the conversion of Muslims from Islam to Christianity. The methods of research employed are narrative inquiry in collaborative action research with colleagues having vast experience in missions, evangelism, apologetics and discipling Muslim people. Field notes, roundtable reflection, interviews and Kirkpatrick’s evaluative process collected and gleaned best practices from case studies and from the Engage Course classes that have been offered so far.
https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/
["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing
deposited
Western Theological Seminary
c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb
open
Metadata Only
rim.ir.atla.com
Etd
public","work_editor
admin
ckarpinski@atla.com
["Etd
52f4c5dd-1c63-4eb7-b00d-6dc39eaf4b57
ad79e3e6-b50e-4284-9917-009ac2c42e92
ckarpinski@atla.com
ckarpinski@atla.com
Ecclesiology and discipleship : rediscovering an effective communal approach
["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8
f63d4677-9b5d-4d6d-9245-f1ff12138123
044fc65c-9039-463a-91da-a5a8e1fb2fab
1
1
Atla RIM
Doctor of Ministry
Western Theological Seminary
Alvin Padilla Ph.D.
2019
D.Min. These two basic endeavors are what disciples of Jesus should be doing with their lives. We have been transformed, redeemed through the work of Christ on the cross; it begins here with God’s grace and salvation, imparted by the Holy Spirit. Then it must continue by daily taking up our cross and dying to self, or transforming; the life-long process of sanctification. Our church leaders have recognized that it’s not about creating programs, nor one size fits all, but it does involve discovering and rethinking how we can best carry on the work our Lord Jesus commissioned us to be doing.
https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/
https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/
https://repository.westernsem.edu/xmlui/handle/1866/9328
["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing
deposited
Western Theological Seminary
c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb
open
Metadata Only
rim.ir.atla.com
Etd
public","work_editor
admin
ckarpinski@atla.com
["Etd
d6e5e126-bcb1-4172-a896-546e797178ff
b301fba7-b1af-471f-9026-2e199b370e6c
ckarpinski@atla.com
ckarpinski@atla.com
Sudden illness and storytelling : identifying spiritual resilience in a liminal space : a phenomenological and narrative research project
["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8
5f78cc54-c4b0-47c8-afc4-588c7eb764b8
b90dc23d-d3dc-4663-9a38-c5aba2609514
1
1
Atla RIM
Doctor of Ministry
Western Theological Seminary
Chuck DeGroat Ph.D.
2021
D.Min.
