The retreat intended for these pastors to have a meaningful experience of humility during three primary retreat components: 1) a ritual where personal titles, roles, successes, accomplishments, ordinations, and worldly gains were removed; 2) large-group sessions with activities designed to develop self-awareness; and 3) small-group sessions based on “Circle of Trust Touchstones.” Contributing to the field of practical theology, this project includes intensive qualitative research regarding the impact of the three components on retreat participants. I came into this project with three assumptions: the key to preparing our young people for the future lies in identity formation; the identity that will sustain them in the unknown is the one given to them in Baptism; and the best opportunity for churches to shape and nurture this identity is through the ongoing, life-long experience of congregational worship. Thus, this project questions how identity is shaped, what identity the young people of our congregations are currently being shaped in, what the content of Baptismal Identity is, and how congregations can best shape and nurture that identity through congregational worship. Identity, the project finds, is shaped as practices and liturgies of the various cultures in which we live, work, learn, play, and worship inform our understanding of who we are, who our people are, and what our hope and purpose are. The project investigates the various cultures in which our young people dwell and the faith our churches are largely teaching them; and then claims that the identity these cultures and faith instruction are shaping and nurturing in our young people will not sustain them in the unknown challenges of the future. Following a broad study of Biblical covenant history, creation in the imago dei, new creation in Christ, the covenant family of God, and the call to live out God’s relational purposes and redemptive plan; I propose a definition of the identity our young people receive in the waters of baptism which will provide the solid ground on which they will need to walk in the unknown future.
https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/
https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/
https://repository.westernsem.edu/xmlui/handle/1866/9317
["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing
deposited
Western Theological Seminary
c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb
open
Metadata Only
rim.ir.atla.com
Etd
work_editor","public
admin
ckarpinski@atla.com
["Etd
5b0c300f-6835-4f54-b879-7a8ecb7f6fb4
0adccb25-7793-484b-886b-a2893c1630a9
ckarpinski@atla.com
ckarpinski@atla.com
Journeying Home: A Study of Christian Spiritual Formation Through the Interface of the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous and Lectio Divina
["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8
4e462e37-7a1c-4b32-a32e-c2acba8b14c8
c8348867-7e94-4e39-bdbe-3658d2831ca5
1
1
Atla RIM
Doctor of Ministry
Spiritual Formation
Tyndale University
Ouida Pihulyk D.Min.
2022
Canada
D.Min. After decades of longing to belong, God led me first to the halls of 12 Step programs, then to Seminary where I discovered, spiritual formation, Lectio Divina and spiritual direction. In contemplating a model of spiritual formation, the interface of these two experiences came to life in the linkage of the final three steps of A. A. which I characterize as Confess (Step 10), Abide (Step 11), and Give (Step 12).The research observed the spiritual maturation of lay people at various stages of their journey of becoming more like Christ. The project was designed to build a community of trust within a small group who met for seven weeks to practice Lectio Divina. I used the narrative inquiry research method with favorable results. Some participants self-identified both as having a deeper sense of the presence of God and experiencing a change in their approach to daily life while others either experienced movement in one of the dimensions or no movement at all. My conclusion is that, for some, the practice of Lectio Divina can effectuate deeper spiritual formation.
https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/
["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing
deposited
Tyndale University
602e7e7c-0b8b-4e09-af87-84c66ff49c48
open
Metadata Only
rim.ir.atla.com
Etd
work_editor","public
admin
ckarpinski@atla.com
["Etd
bf1e3165-f6e5-4be7-885e-9d9631d76e49
75951bf7-0a1e-47ba-96e9-20cc77433b61
ckarpinski@atla.com
ckarpinski@atla.com
Unplugging to connect : reimagining Christian identity formation in the digital age
["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8
40f0decd-acb8-41f0-9699-733c14889b6b
f64edf5e-01b0-452d-a10e-25958e6c6d34
1
1
Atla RIM
Doctor of Ministry
Western Theological Seminary
Chuck DeGroat Ph.D.
2021
D.Min. With their myriad uses, screens have found a permanent place in our lives. We reap many benefits from our screens, but thoughtful observers cannot help but wonder, “Are screens delivering on their promised purpose in our lives?” There is good reason to consider thoughtfully how we use them. Overstimulation and constant connection are taking a toll on our souls. We have seen a significant decline in mental health since the invention of the smartphone. Overuse of screens, especially social media, leads to lower levels of happiness and higher levels of anxiety. We do well to be intentional about how we use screens and to implement practices that will mitigate their negative effects. This paper explores the shadow side of screen use. It also looks into relevant Christian practices that help develop one’s identity as a beloved child of God. My project invited families into a six-week experience with imaginative prayer. While my focus is on kids and screens, I believe this project offers something for everyone who wants to be released from screen’s grip into glorious freedom as beloved children of God.
https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/
https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/
https://repository.westernsem.edu/xmlui/handle/1866/9340
["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing
deposited
Western Theological Seminary
c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb
open
Metadata Only
rim.ir.atla.com
Etd
public","work_editor
admin
ckarpinski@atla.com
["Etd
472080fc-9aeb-4966-b432-e56c1ff77a1c
d473b0f0-3303-441a-83fc-0922709e1a35
ckarpinski@atla.com
ckarpinski@atla.com
Equipping Leaders at Hope Fellowship Church in Frisco, Texas, to Assess and Facilitate Ongoing Spiritual Development
["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8
f4d1aa02-8908-4a0e-abbb-0fc795b963e4
77dc89b8-d3b1-47a4-9be5-47ea0c5ff993
1
1
Atla RIM
Doctor of Ministry
Christian Formation and Discipleship
Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary
Coleman Ford Ph.D.
2022
United States
D.Min. Herman Bavinck shares this deep conviction as he writes, “Good theology puts this knowledge of God on public display. It resists allowing theology to degenerate into rhetoric, a theology merely of words; it seeks the heart of the matter, knowing God in order to worship him, love him, and serve him.” He continues by writing, “Such theology is never a dry and academic exercise; it is eminently practical and superlatively fruitful for life.” As he eloquently suggests, good theology is always both practical and fruitful. That means that good theology is always given expression in practices that foster a deep love for God and a meaningful experience of his love and grace. One practice that is both deeply theological and spiritually formative is prayer. The practice of prayer is one of the primary expressions of the spiritual life, and prayer is also an integral component of our spiritual formation and our transformation. When reflecting on prayer, David Benner writes, “Prayer would not be worthy of being called a spiritual practice if it did not play a central role in this deep inner work of transformation.” As he makes clear, prayer is an integral component of our spiritual transformation. This leads me to the conclusion that a vibrant spirit life includes the practice of prayer in its many forms.
https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/
https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/
https://repository.westernsem.edu/xmlui/handle/1866/9804
["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing
deposited
Western Theological Seminary
c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb
open
Metadata Only
rim.ir.atla.com
Etd
public","work_editor
admin
ckarpinski@atla.com
["Etd
30ed3067-3630-4b7e-9e5d-399c124533ca
3b1f0a6e-108e-44f0-9a25-eb38fa978380
ckarpinski@atla.com
ckarpinski@atla.com
Embracing disruption : equipping the church to embrace disruption as a catalyst for spiritual transformation
["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8
126954de-c233-44c9-be4c-09aaa685fe56
a2aa3c0c-45be-46b1-a8a0-a7d477edd0e7
1
1
Atla RIM
Doctor of Ministry
Western Theological Seminary
Chuck DeGroat Ph.D.
2021
D.Min. These situations often lead to new perspectives that help them ask new questions about the world around them. For me, three specific instances of disruption had particular importance when I served as a young minister. These disruptions included a woman with a mental illness, a church member with a cancer diagnosis, and a friend struggling with depression. These three experiences helped me understand how to approach other disruptive circumstances and be attentive to the ways God was at work. Disruption can lead to life-changing spiritual transformations. However, not all people who experience disruption also experience transformation in a positive way. Why is this so? What is the connection between disruptive moments and an individual’s capacity for profound spiritual transformation and renewal? These questions have guided my research and my effort to determine how church leaders can equip their communities to embrace disruption as a catalyst for spiritual transformation. I began by researching how various scholars and theologians have addressed the topic of disruption. I also looked at how God often worked through disruptive moments in scripture to bring about God’s purposes in the world. This led me to start a project to help church members intentionally move towards disruptive places as a means of spiritual transformation. What I discovered, however, was that my plans would be disrupted in an unprecedented way. This project and the global pandemic of 2020 forced me to embrace my own disruptive journey. This journey would challenge me in significant ways but would lead to profound personal spiritual transformation.
https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/
https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/
https://repository.westernsem.edu/xmlui/handle/1866/9802
["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing
deposited
Western Theological Seminary
c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb
open
Metadata Only
rim.ir.atla.com
Etd
work_editor","public
admin
ckarpinski@atla.com
["Etd
3a72f382-9282-4ad7-be5a-4b7c29fe59be
3e9a1bb9-3a39-4e45-bfe5-0055addd17f5
ckarpinski@atla.com
ckarpinski@atla.com
God's deepening life in me : the evangelical experience of interior freedom in the spiritual exercises of Saint Ignatius Loyola
["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8
c720065e-13b2-48b4-8627-5bbd9329360c
3f3e6e33-1070-4eb2-a0a0-2f954ed74028
1
1
Atla RIM
Doctor of Ministry
Western Theological Seminary
Chuck DeGroat Ph.D.
2021
D.Min. The exercises do not require someone learned in the Bible or Theology, they simply require someone to come with their Bible and a hunger for more. Indeed, so simple and egalitarian was Ignatius’ vision that he was hauled before the inquisition on multiple occasions on the accusation of being an alumbrado which was a term often used synonymously in Spain for Lutherans. While Ignatius was not a reformer in the same sense that Luther, Calvin and others were reformers, he was a reformer within the Catholic Church. He was a reformer to the extent that it was only through forming some powerful friendships in the church hierarchy and through the famous pledge of absolute obedience to the Pope in the constitutions of the Society of Jesus that the Jesuits were able to survive beyond Ignatius’ lifetime. It took nearly 500 years but the spirituality of Ignatius has brought significant reform to the Catholic Church both through The Second Vatican Council and now through Pope Francis, the first Jesuit Pope.
https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/
https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/
https://repository.westernsem.edu/xmlui/handle/1866/9803
["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing
deposited
Western Theological Seminary
c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb
open
Metadata Only
rim.ir.atla.com
Etd
public","work_editor
admin
ckarpinski@atla.com
["Etd
3cf80cab-db41-4e84-bc09-c6549db31223
36f3f96d-0283-4ccd-9ea9-2210ac351789
ckarpinski@atla.com
ckarpinski@atla.com
An Examination of Lee Rutland Scarborough's Influence on the Southern Baptist Convention From 1918-1925
["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8
5e99ce23-b29f-45ea-8ffa-83b64ff2d59e
5ae5e586-88bb-4109-9e1d-d7eccd754f55
1
1
Atla RIM
Doctor of Ministry
Pastoral Leadership
Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary
Deron J Biles Ph.D.
2022
United States
Dissertation
Text
Ronald D Rucker
Evangelism
Bible. Chapter 1 introduces the study and includes a thesis statement and an examination of the biographical factors, which influenced Scarborough’s life. This chapter includes Scarborough’s family background, call to ministry, education, pastoral experience, summary, and timeline. Chapter 2 examines Scarborough’s influence as general director of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Seventy-Five Million Campaign, which was a program intended to raise 75 million dollars over a five-year period from 1919-1924, to help finance Baptist efforts in missions, education, and other benevolent work. This chapter presents his influence in development and implementation of a strategy to execute the campaign. Chapter 3 examines Scarborough’s influence as a committee member of the Future Program Commission, which recommended adopting the Southern Baptist Convention’s Cooperative Program [CP] in 1925. This chapter presents his influence related to the theological convictions he maintained in the area of cooperation. Chapter 4 examines Scarborough’s influence as a member of the Baptist Faith & Message committee, which framed the first Southern Baptist convention-wide confession, entitled the Baptist Faith & Message in 1925. Prior to the 1925 confession, they used the New Hampshire Confession of Faith (1833) and the Abstract of Principles (1858). Chapter 5 provides a conclusion for the entire dissertation and centers on one of the most important concepts espoused by Scarborough during his lifetime. The concept of cooperation was redefined by Scarborough in a way for Southern Baptists that still marks a distinguishing feature of the denomination today. This chapter solidifies the thesis of the dissertation by an examination of how Scarborough utilized his influence to engineer a new direction for Southern Baptist through his efforts on the Seventy-Five Million Campaign, formation of the Cooperative Program and the Baptist Faith & Message.
https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/
["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing
deposited
Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary
b2ad2862-737d-4dde-8145-b9b6962ac5f3
open
Metadata Only
rim.ir.atla.com
Etd
public","work_editor
admin
ckarpinski@atla.com
["Etd
b0c19fcc-e5e0-418d-b75e-64caf13ed6f6
376e395c-24c8-4395-965c-04e0d8e4064a
ckarpinski@atla.com
ckarpinski@atla.com
The Art of Seamless Pastoral Transition: A Guide For Church Leaders
["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8
a27df118-1891-4b83-9636-122fec0d3eda
666b0014-fbb2-43ef-afda-47190555c61e
1
1
Atla RIM
Doctor of Ministry
Parish Focus: Risking Faithfully
Pittsburgh Theological Seminary
Kenneth Woo Ph.D.","Jerome Creach Ph.D.
2022
United States
D.Min.
