The themes that surfaced during the pastor interviews were identified, organized, and presented in accord with the research questions that directed this study. Specifically, the themes that emerged under Biblical Impetuses were 1) Our Oneness in Christ, 2) The Great Commission, and 3) The Second Great Commandment. Those under Identifying the Challenges were 1) Fear, 2) Anger, 3) Distrust, 4) Guilt and Shame, and 5) Surprise. Under Working Through the Challenges: 1) Prayer, 2) The Gospel, 3) Friendship, 4) Acknowledgement, 5) Education, 6) Joint-Congregation Events and Ministries, and 7) Black Leadership. And then under Growth Through the Challenges: 1) The Sense of Our Oneness in Christ, 2) Patience, 3) Humility, Repentance and Prayer, and 4) Obedience. The study revealed that this essential pursuit hinges around 1) prayer, 2) relationships (genuine, contagious friendships that begin with the pastors and flow down into the congregations from there), 3) bold, sensitive pastoral leadership, 4) education on cultures and where our present life together lies within God’s larger redemptive story, and 4) the importance of seeing through one another’s eyes in the midst of the story."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"related_url_tesim":["http://covenantlibrary.org/etd/2019/Doctor_Craig_DMin_2019.pdf"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e57e5218-1d34-47f5-b1a5-b84efbc9e61f"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131010537095168,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:40:42.068Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:10:11Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:43:21Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"943c157a-41de-4ed8-b196-2e55171c03a4","accessControl_ssim":["1c40e61d-9cc7-48d9-bbe1-c341e8cc40f1"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Leviticus 18:5 in Galatians 3:12"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:10:10Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:28:18Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["ce4f571f-f483-402d-9466-cbe4638c11dc"],"hasLease_ssim":["08db9fcf-f14e-4b48-bcc5-9bbc1651f76e"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Master of Theology"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["C John Collins Ph.D."],"year_tesim":["2018"],"resource_type_tesim":["Thesis"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Aoyagi, Seima"],"keyword_tesim":["Pauline theology"],"subject_tesim":["Bible. This sensitive difference that LXX makes suggests that Lev 18:5 should better be translated as “shall live in them (~h,B'),” which makes the relationship between life and law as consequential, rather than causal. While a causal relationship makes obedience to the law based on cause and merit in order to gain life, this consecutive relationship makes life a natural consequence of the obedience. Both could be said as “conditional,” but it is not a meritorious condition, rather, it is a consecutive condition. I will also point out that Paul respects the non-meritorious significance of evn no,mw","In Galatians 3:12, Paul says “The law is not of faith, rather, the one who does them shall live by them” citing Leviticus 18:5. At first glance, Gal 3:12 seems to present Paul’s blunt statement rejecting the law and Lev 18:5 seems to be cited to prove that the law is in opposition to faith. This impression is enhanced by noticing that Lev 18:5 is put antithetically to Habakkuk 2:4, which is also cited in Gal 3:11. Because Hab 2:4 is promoting justification by faith, putting Lev 18:5 in opposition seems to suggest that Lev 18:5 advocates meritorious works-righteousness. Because both Lev 18:5 and Hab 2:4 are from the OT, it seems odd for Paul to treat one OT passage as promoting a good theology and the other as promoting bad theology. These difficulties become more obvious when we notice that Lev 18:5 in its original context never promotes meritorious works-righteousness. Instead, Lev 18:5 encourages God’s people toward righteous living as a proper response for God’s chosen people. This verse is an encouragement for Israel to walk in the law instead of pagan teachings because only the Lord’s law would bring people to life. Why then in Gal 3:12 is Paul citing Lev 18:5 in such a seemingly negative way? In this paper, I will study Lev 18:5 and Hab 2:4 in its original context, then study how Paul uses both text in Gal 3:10-12. As I do this, I will focus especially on how the prepositions B (in/by) is translated in LXX for Lev 18:5 and Hab 2:4. What I will show is that while “live by/in them” in Lev 18:5 and “live by/in faith” in Hab 2:4 both use the preposition B (in/by), in LXX they are translated differently. Lev 18:5 translates it as evn no,mw","“in the law” in Lev 18:5. The aim of this thesis is to analyze the history of interpretation on Romans 13:1-7, and then to provide a fresh interpretation of it, with interaction from modern commentaries. Some key questions about Romans 13:1-7 have arisen over the centuries: (1) To whom does Paul refer when he talks about the “governing authorities”?; (2) Whose judgment does Paul reference in vs. 2? Is God the judge in view, or is it the governing authorities?; (3) Does Paul condone capital punishment in vs. 4, where he references the sword?; (4) Does “wrath” refer to eternal condemnation, or temporal punishment in vs. 4?; (5) What does Paul mean by referring to the governing authorities as “God’s servants” and “ministers of God”? Is he putting them on a par with ecclesiastical authorities?; (6) Is this passage supposed to be understood as a universal rule for the Church throughout history, or was it intended to be guidance for the Christians in Rome around A.D. 55? After a concise introduction, there is a detailed annotated translation of Romans 13:1-7, which provides insight into the translational and interpretive decisions made by the author. After a general introduction in Chapter 1, then Chapters 2-4 present an analysis of some key figures in the history of interpretation from the Early Church to the Reformation. Specifically, we examine commentaries and sermons written by Origen, John Chrysostom, Augustine, Peter Abelard, William of St. Thierry, Nicholas of Lyra, Martin Luther, and John Calvin. The short answer? There are many factors that contribute, but our family background is one of the largest contributions. Just as Proverbs 22:6 is true: “Train up a child in the way he should go, even when he is old, he will not depart from it,” the opposite would be true as well: Do not train up a child, and they will depart from “it”. What is “it”? “It” equals habits of godliness, wisdom, truth, fear of the Lord, and sanctification that comes from the training received from godly parents which extends to the next generation. Our mission to train up a child would be in jeopardy of the mandate that Solomon sets forth, if we did not train up a parent in the way they should go.Training is at the heart of this research project. Because there are many individuals who are about to be parents that do not pursue biblical parenting education training before they become parents, a conscious effort to strive to bridge our past with the present and create a bright future for our children, our family, and the generations that follow is integral to the success of parenting. If the concern for strong biblical parenting education is important, believers should be as adamant in pursuing this preparation as much as they are in beginning a biblical marriage with the right steps. Biblical marriages usually begin by the couple taking the time to pursue every avenue of preparation and advice that there is available. But that does not seem to be the case for the role of parenting. There appears to be a large deficit of understanding in the value of pursuing every avenue of preparation and advice available for this vital beginning of parenting. For some reason, the need is not there. It is quite puzzling and disheartening to know that this deficit exists when there is deep importance to this job.The research examined uses a hermeneutical phenomenological approach in the form of personal and group interviews, conversations with student parents of my elementary and secondary classes, and a university essay question from my university students. It was the goal of this project to create a plan of action that can be implemented to begin the journey of parenting with our aim fully on the target moving from working through one’s family background, to the success and the health of our marriage, to the implementation of a strong family unit. Let us train up a parent in the way they should go."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["8322f611-a593-413a-8bcd-0011fba52dc7"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130814869667840,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:37:35.465Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:09:39Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:39:52Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"ccd2d0d7-5444-41fc-9d32-5cd071bc997a","accessControl_ssim":["42112f5b-8f1c-4439-a6a9-0ed8644f9480"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The Origin and Development of Christianity on St. Helena Island, South Carolina amongst the Gullah People"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:09:38Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:00:47Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["03787feb-212e-42ac-85e3-20cd43188239"],"hasLease_ssim":["eca69822-fbcc-48a5-aa4e-cabaddfbbc12"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Educational Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Leonard Small Ph.D.","Michael S. A presentation entitled, “God’s Black Children,” traced the spread of Christianity from the Day of Pentecost in Jerusalem, through Africa, through the Middle Passage, and to the Gullah people of St. Helena, SC. The first objective was to determine the extent of the knowledge of a sample of 144 Black Christians including bishops, pastors, deacons, and parishioners from South Carolina, Georgia, Africa, and the Caribbean. With the exception of bishops and pastors, a majority of the deacons and parishioners indicated that they did not know: (1) that the “Disciple Mark founded the first African church” and (2) that the “major doctrines of the Christian faith were hammered out in Africa.” A majority of all groups indicated that they did not know (3) that “Ethiopia became a Christian Nation in 328 AD, 50 years before Rome”; (4) that the “Kongo Kingdom was a Christian Nation for 128 years before slavery”; (5) that the “first 100 years of slavery on St. Helena, all Africans were Kongolese”; and that “Christianity was practiced by enslaved Africans on St. Helena for 250 years.” A large majority of all groups agreed: (1) that this information should be taught in churches and seminaries or shared with others; (2) they will preach or teach the material in the future; and (3) that they would be interested in learning more from the book, God’s Black Children."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["8322f611-a593-413a-8bcd-0011fba52dc7"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130964769898496,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:39:58.421Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:09:39Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:42:33Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"e6cb142a-cc63-4c83-9d28-630756dafe29","accessControl_ssim":["94a23962-a6e0-4622-9fd7-990d6e09be96"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Understanding Modern-Day Christian Immigrant Women's Stories through the Book of Ruth"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:09:39Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:43:51Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["7632c5be-b75c-41cc-a650-f2e181f46cc5"],"hasLease_ssim":["1b32aa6a-aa20-45e8-b8dc-6929e08e8cb1"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Michael Pocock D.Miss.","Brenda S. The Book of Ruth served as a biblico-historical lens to help analyze the participants’ experiences with immigration as believers in Christ, and to answer three main research questions: (1) Are immigrant Christian women aware of the connection their experience with immigration has with the book of Ruth? (2) What common experiences do these immigrant Christian women share? (3) How does their faith in God inform their experience with immigration? To collect data, in-depth interviews were conducted and recorded using a phenomenological approach with twelve self-identified evangelical Christian immigrant women. Data analysis revealed that only two participants are aware of the connection their experience with immigration has with the book of Ruth, albeit the connections these participants drew vary in focus and interpretation. Regarding common experiences, participants reported experiencing a sense of loss not only of culture, family, and identity, but also of their marriages and loved ones. In many instances, experiencing loss in their lives led them to develop a deeper understanding of God’s attributes such as His power, care, protection, and forgiveness. Data also revealed that when facing hardship, most participants were able to bounce back and become somewhat resilient. An unexpected finding, however, was that almost half of the participants mentioned experiences with abuse typically, but not always, perpetrated by male figures. Data also showed that participants’ experience with immigration seem to be informed by their respective theological traditions. Implications of this study are that there is a need for better pastoral care for immigrants to help both men and women to deal with their stories of trauma and abuse, and the Book of Ruth can be an instrument to help address these needs."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["8322f611-a593-413a-8bcd-0011fba52dc7"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131131149549568,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:42:37.093Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:09:39Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:18:09Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"2935e466-52d8-4e3f-86c6-773256419eb7","accessControl_ssim":["02fdeb5a-05cf-4140-bf33-fc7d43c75a20"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A Phenomenology of Practicing Dignified Dialogue on Denver Seminary Students' Perceptions of Biblical Mutuality"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:09:38Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:20:12Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["db4d9766-c157-4c6a-ab73-625ff64fe618"],"hasLease_ssim":["e5e8adf5-2454-4a2f-9abd-db8a260ca535"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"discipline_tesim":["Leadership in Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Denver Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Marshall Shelley D.Min."],"year_tesim":["2021"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. The goal was to explore the role, significance, and potential value of practicing dignified dialogue with other Christians as a way to negotiate divergent theological perspectives in order to determine, in part, how the exchange of ideas via dialogue might broaden understanding and even rightfully further consideration of the subject. A phenomenological research method was employed to discover the lived experiences of Denver Seminary students who practiced dignified dialogue in group studies around the topic of biblical mutuality for ten weeks. Participants’ collective experiences revealed that though participating in dignified dialogue was a difficult, thought-provoking, and tumultuous practice, it was a necessary skill to further develop as it is an essential component of shared humanity . The study affirmed the importance of dignified dialogue as a way to navigate conflict among Christians for the purpose of growing in Christlikeness, modeling unity among diversity, and sharing God’s reconciling love with a broken world."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Denver Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e7af129f-938f-4821-9463-dc6ded35d563"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133371019034624,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:18:13.198Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:09:09Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:12:42Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"bb1589ba-f40b-472e-9ea9-5af5bd57c52c","accessControl_ssim":["c29d8011-e799-49cd-8eef-0731a6b3ddba"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Place Forming Pastor"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:09:08Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:30:53Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["e0aa946a-29dd-43be-9e7a-80bf26b5eadc"],"hasLease_ssim":["7e3a1d6e-1dc0-440f-9be8-08b886385e32"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"discipline_tesim":["Christian Spirituality"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Christine Hong Ph.D.","Jacob Myers Ph.D."],"year_tesim":["2021"],"location_tesim":["United States"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min.
